I thought we just signed Jacob Schum a month or so ago? We really don't treat Punters well lol

The Packers are making a change at punter. Jacob Schum was in that spot in 2016, but the team announced on Thursday that he has been released. Schum, who punted for the Buccaneers in 2015, had a net average of 39.1 yards per kick while appearing in every game for Green Bay last season. Undrafted...

Green Bay’s revolving door at punter takes another spin. Just seconds after we at APC published an article discussing the Green Bay Packers ’ signing of rookie fourth-round draft pick Jamaal Williams, the Packers made that signing official.
But that’s not remotely the biggest news to come out of this press release.
Instead, the big news is that the Packers have parted ways with the player who spent all of last season as the team’s punter and holder, Jacob Schum. Schum was signed during the preseason in 2016 to replace Tim Masthay , who was released at that time. He averaged 43.2 yards per punt last year while placing 19 of his 65 punts inside the 20-yard line. He also kicked four punts into the end zone for touchbacks and had a net average of 39.1 yards.
This move leaves undrafted rookie Justin Vogel as the lone punter on the Packers’ roster. Vogel, a product of the University of Miami, essentially matched Schum’s gross average last season, with a 43.8 yards-per-kick average on 64 punts. However, Vogel placed 25 of his kicks inside the 20 in 2016.
Just a month ago, Vogel mentioned in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel  that a shot at the Packers’ active roster was the main reason he signed in Green Bay after going undrafted: “I know the guy they have now has only been there a year, and he doesn’t have a super long-term deal,” he said. The Packers could certainly bring in competition for Vogel this spring or in training camp, but apparently the team feels good enough with him moving forward to give Schum the boot.
In one final roster move, the Packers signed rookie wide receiver Colby Pearson to take Schum’s spot on the roster. Pearson played at BYU with fellow Packers rookies Williams and quarterback Taysom Hill, where he caught 38 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in 2016. According to NFL Draft Scout , he recorded a 4.50-second 40-yard dash at BYU’s Pro Day.

Walterfootball's assessment of Vogel-

2. Justin Vogel, P, Miami
Height: 6-4. Weight: 208.
Projected Round (2017): 6-FA.
4/26/17: In 2016, Vogel averaged 44 yards per punt with a long of 63 yards.

8/20/16: In 2015, Vogel averaged 42.5 yards per punt. After not winning the punting job at Florida, he transferred to Miami and took over as the Hurricanes punter in 2014. Vogel averaged 43 yards per punt with a long of 65 yards the season. He also had 12 punts over 50 yards and 21 placed inside the 20-yard line. His father, Paul, played linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Oilers.

The second best punter coming out of college this year.
He was one of the guys I was interested in on draft day. He has never punted in Dec in GB so if he wins the job he will have to make some adjustments.

We know what we had in Schum, why take up a roster spot for a competition. Give Vogel snaps and see how he does. I'm pretty sure Schum will be available if Vogel doesn't perform well enough.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

At 6'-4" , Vogel's size reminds me of another punter that went on to be inducted into the HOF. If he can even come close to the great Ray Guy of Oakland, then GB will have picked a peach. [thumbup]

I surely hope they gain an effective punter, but equally important an effective holder who has a "chemistry" with Crosby.
We know that both Masthay and Schum were effective holders.

In the past, back-up QB's regularly held for FG Kickers . I believe that is the solution to a holder for Crosby . [cool]

Oh ya, Colby Pearson (WR) , don't know enough about him as yet . [shrug]

Also because I think they straight up took some of that info from Vogel's NFL.com profile ... of course if you look at Walterfootball assessments it surprisingly exactly follows NFL.com's grading of the punters that were invited to the combine. Kinda surprise the order exactly matched...

Of course, whom ever did NFL.com grading had his best three of his best 4 punters grades on guys who didn't go to the combine. So Vogel was graded 5th best punter for that person.

Of course, I guess there is during the punt drills... though the long snapper might be busy then... maybe the punt return drills? No sure if the long snapper is involved for that or not.

Point being, if the holder is the punter, it frees up a ton of practice time... where if it's someone else, it's much harder to find practice time, and say it's Randall Cobb... there is a chance he might get injured while on offense... so you'll need another back-up practicing as well, in which you'll need to find more time.

So the punted has to at least be a decent holder for practice at minimum.

beast (8h) : Not sure why a players views reflect on GB... instead of simply on the player
Martha Careful (17-May) : I bet some of us have had 6+ mRNA jabs, a UKR flag on our walls, and still think Fauci has a thread of integrity
Zero2Cool (16-May) : From what I've read, it's all Jets , not us.
CanPackFan (16-May) : Will there ever be a time when Rodgers' whacko views will not reflect on GB? He is the past, thank god.

Zero2Cool (13-May) : Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line
Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.

Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train

Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”

dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
