Dom Capers isn't going anywhere and the Packers are not going to sign or trade for anyone to help the defense. That being said and understood, what do you think the Packers need to do to shore up the defense?

We had the most starters (all except Burnett) on the field vs Saints and still had communications issues and even had 10 men on the field. Often times we hear players credit the game "slowing down" for them as to the reason for their improvement. Thus, I won't stop beating this drum that the scheme should be simplified. It's not that they are stupid or not smart enough. It's that if players are repeatedly not communicating efficiently in your scheme, your scheme should change.

The other constant issue Dom Capers defenses have had is tackling. I don't know if the precious CBA allows it, but I would be good with players being fined $100 each time they fail to tackle someone and given $500 for each time they probably tackle someone.

Of course, you have to define black/white what is proper tackling form. Something this team is clearly foreign to.

We do have several above average to good players on this defense. Mike Daniels. Kenny Clark. Clay Matthews. Nick Perry. Morgan Burnett. (I would say Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix but I think he's injured and playing like ass so he's not even average)

So, what are your keys to self scouting this defense and improving ---aghh--- from with-in?

Has all of the defensive starters played even a snap together this year?

the secondary needs to get aggressive and start jamming guys off the line. I'd rather see them get burned trying to be physical and press the receivers off the line, than getting burned because they have a 10 yard cushion. with the lack of pressure up front, they need to do something to disrupt the passing routes.

Biggest issue with this defense is the middle being left wide open all game, every game, for years. I used to think it was Micah Hyde just being fucking horrible. But he's doing well elsewhere and the problem existed before him, and remains there after him. That tells me it's the scheme. Another perennial issue is giving a 10 yaard cushion on 3rd down. My big toe knows better than that. How come Dom doesn't? We needed Dom gone years ago.

Dom Capers age should not be the issue here , he is after-all not a player. He and the Head Coach plan the strategy for each game . The players on the field must try to execute that strategy .

IMO , playing Defense is much harder than playing Offense. The player must react (correctly) to the actions of the Offense that knows where he is going and are trying to fool the defenders. It is not enough that Defensive players be great athletes , but they must think and react within milli-seconds or the offensive player will have the advantage . Quick reactions require quick thinking . It's just not enough to be a fast , 245 lb. Linebacker , he also needs to read and react to field situations as quickly as they happen or he will be taken advantage of .

I'm not calling anyone dumb , but superior reaction is the name of the game in Defenses moving forward .

Packers have allowed 23 pass plays of 20+ yards vs 12 sacks. Neither of these are good enough. Both go hand in hand.
For the D to make a turnaround several things that need to happen IMO.
-Simplify the pass coverage on the back end and cut down on missed assignments. Let's start by getting 11 guys on the field and progressing to actually knowing what defensive formation has been called.

-Get Burnett back in and take the phone away from Ha Ha. He isn't answering. See Above.

-Get Clay, Perry, and, Ha Ha playing to the level they are being paid. (Or even close). They aren't producing and need to own it.

-Get Biegel and Brooks in to back up Mathews and Perry because the backups are doing 0. This could allow Perry and Mathews a few more plays off so they could actually do something in the 4th quarter.

On a side note for God's sake take Jones off the punt return team. The guy must have cost them 50 yards in penalties Sunday. I know he's a rookie but he ought to know the difference from back to front.

Agree a lot with Smokey. to go along though, where the coaching comes in is making sure the players are using the proper fundamentals to aid in the quick thinking and not making the wrong moves for the scheme. When and how to jam at the LOS, in what situations to use inside or trail techniques. For lineman when and when not to stunt, which gaps they are responsible for.

There was the big run by MN where even I could have run through the hole. Clay was outside the RT, the next body was dlineman over the C. Vikes had 3 WR on one side and that pulled I think it was Ryan outside of Clay in coverage. Ball was snapped Clay was blocked outside, RG blocked down leaving a hole half the width of the field with nobody there to fill the hole. Now there is no way I believe that is the way the defense was designed, somebody messed up, probably more than one somebody. Somebody should have either called a Time Out or say something to shift people around. Martinez probably should have shifted when Ryan vacated in coverage, or the S/CB that wasn't covering anybody should have taken the coverage instead of Ryan. Or one of the 2 deep safeties should have come down.

I do have a problem with how Dom has not been able to address the coverage across the middle, and It is his overall responsibility to make sure his assistance are teaching the proper techniques to the players.

Problem with the D is that Dom's system is too complex for young players. But Ted keeps us under the cap with young players, so that's what Dom gets.

Team has to figure that out.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
