Packers make it official. Interesting Mike McCarthy will report directly to Mark Murphy and not the GM.

Gutekunst becomes 10th person to hold title of general manager for Packers

“The process of identifying our next general manager gave us the opportunity to analyze our entire football operation,” said Murphy. “While we have enjoyed a lot of success, we need to improve. With that in mind, the head coach, general manager and executive vice president/director of football operations will report to me moving forward. While I understand this is a departure from the Packers’ current structure, it will serve to increase the breadth and frequency of communication and collaboration. Ultimately, it will make the Packers better.”

That part really stood out to me too. It contradicts what he said last week.

If there was ever a question about MM's stability and the resulting impact on attracting a DC, this really squashes it.

I am sure they would have made this change thinking it would make them a weaker organization.

What it makes me wonder about is if Murphy feels it is too much for Brian to handle the full GM duties so he is going to slowly move him into a position of more authority if he is successful with the duties he has been given today.

I think it's a response to Ted not really ever listening to anybody's advice or suggestions which I think is still a bad response because Ted isn't the GM anymore. There probably was something to Mike McCarthy threatening to quit because this really only benefits him. On the plus side it adds more stability to the coaching staff so it's less likely to turn off potential DC/OC hires who may have thought Mike McCarthy could be on the way out.

So from my perspective, this looks like either

a) Gutekunst indicated he would be interested in firing McCarthy and Murphy does not want that to happen; or

b) Gutekunst has no interest in firing McCarthy and Murphy wants to reserve the right to do so.

I wonder which possibility is more likely?
