This forum is a more interesting place than you are making it out to be. Unfortunately for your ill-conceived charge of blind optimism, many of the active posters on this site hold varying opinions with varying levels of criticism on the team. There are some that are superbly optimistic, sure. But most people articulate stances that balance support for the F.O. with criticism or caution. "Blind optimism just doesn't cut it for me sorry," ehh? Well it doesn't cut it for most of the people on these boards either. Or were you implying that "blind optimism" works for the rest of us? I'm not even getting emotional about this. Neglect the fact that your "blind optimism" can be interpreted as being a jerk thing to say -- I'm saying most active posters ARE NOT blindly optimistic. Your implicit slander is simply not correct.

Also, you (and a few others whose names should be horrifically obvious) hold viewpoints that revert -- almost necessarily considering the seething hatred that comes with the viewpoint -- every conversation to the slander of Ted Thompson. Your general outlook on the team and in particular the front office is negative. Guys like Rodgers are fighting uphill simply because they aren't named Favre and/or you disagreed with the premise (that the Packers were moving forward with Rodgers, i.e. Favregate).

It goes on in circles and never stops. You are the haters. We're "blindly optimistic"? Well then you guys must eat babies or something, because you are on the opposite side of the spectrum.

*edit: sorry for the length of the quotes.

There's a vast difference between complaining about decisions the team makes -- hell, everyone knows I do my share -- and having absolutely nothing good to say about anything a team that was essentially 3 plays away from a PLAYOFF APPEARANCE one year removed from a championship game berth.

I've stated my opinion and I'm done with this thread.

AWESOME, you are done, and I am not. I am hoping our, the Packers, counter punch comes from within the team.

my main candidates include:
Brandon Jackson
Jermicheal Finley
James Jones
hopefully these guys can stay healthy for an entire season, and become impact players for the future.

on defense
A.J. hawk
and somebody in the defensive secondary and defensive line. maybe tramon williams, and the Ted Thompson free agent acquisition.

after injuries to Barnett, Jenkins, and Bigby, the defense was completely ineffective.

The Packers could not generate a pass rush from the defensive line after Jenkins was injured, running backs and TE run free over the middle of the field, but changing to the 3-4 is the answer?????

sorry, but i am not sure what we have done to improve the team from last season but am hopeful a current player on the roster can have an breakout year.

"dd80forever" wrote:

I'm hopeful as well, but dreadfully feel hopeless. I don't think if our best players stay healthy and we get the breaks that this team is anything more than hovering around .500.

I like Current players. Love Donald Driver, Jennings was a great pick, etc but I just do not see the talent on this team. It turned out just like it truly was last year. Young undeveloped players, brought in on the cheap, losing games on clutch plays week in and week out.

So I don't choose to go around and say "if this happened" or if that didn't happen" blah blah blah, we'd have been decent. Hell, the Lions fans could say that as could any other team in the league.

If we were that darn good it wouldn't have came down to one play or one holding call. Good teams make plays in the clutch or overcome thier mistakes. Thats sports on any level.

It's scary how some as fans buy into the "building for the future" line of crap. Teams do build for the future but that can go on forever. We are far enough along in the Ted campaign that a 6-10 year should have fans angry. I know it was A-Rods first year as a starter but Ted should have better prepared us for the year.

I keep hearing how great A-Rod played, so if he wasn't the problem, don't use that for an excuse. We had injuries, but nothing drastic. All teams have injuries. Doesn't that say something about the depth of this team?

Somewhere in all the spin you guys like to use is the reason we were 6-10. I hear A-Rod played good, so 1st year starting QB must not be it. I hear Ted is good at evaluating, yet his backups couldn't step in and win games. I hear Ted re-signed guys, yet those guys coupled with Ted's talent around them were 6-10.

In all fairness I was replying to the post that said I was always extremely negative. I was just stating why I feel negative about our direction.

I enjoy all the posters on this board, I really do. Zero has a great place here. I however sometimes struggle with the logic some use. I want that optimism they have and am looking for them to supply me a tad of hope with some sensible debate, which in turn makes this forum diverse and interesting.

It's nothing personal. You say I'm negative, I say there is no reason to be positive thus the blind optimism statement. It wasn't meant to come off as an insult and I apologize if it did.

The problem is you discount my negativity as being something to do with Favre or a hate for Ted. It's easier just to say "you hate Ted" or "You love Brett" than to actually read and take in to consideration points DH and I make.

Speaking purely as a moderator here, I would like to cordially request that certain individuals show a little netiquette and stop cluttering these threads with quotes nested four and five deep. I shouldn't have to scroll down two screens just to get to what you're trying to say. As for counter punch needed. Anything, something more than Smith and Preston would be a nice punch. A stomping of the Bears on opening day would be a nice counter punch.

DD, what I'm arguing is that a predisposition against Ted Thompson IN THE FIRST PLACE (partially informed by the Favre situation) can create a skewed view. Maybe you don't do that. Maybe I'm not giving your thought process enough time. Maybe you have a lot argumentative acumen and I don't give you enough credit. Those are all possibilities. But it seems more likely to me that the majority of what you say about the team (or at the very least, the front office) is negative.

Well, I do not have many positive things to say right now. I think DD and Jennings are awesome WR's. Woodson and Harris are good but slowing down and I worry about the depth behind them. A-Rod isn't going to win, or to be fair, lose games by himself playing like he did last year, so I think we need help all over the place. I'm not saying cut all the other guys but we should be looking to upgrade all the units other than WR position as a whole.

A few nice pieces surrounded by average, inexperienced players is where I see us. Certainly not a place I feel comfortable sitting. It's frustrating because their are pieces out there. Not big overpriced guys but solid veterans to go with the youth.

You have to understand how the process works. Right now it's NFL Draft time. When you know you are adding several players (what is it, nine picks this year?) coming up soon you don't make a bunch of free agent acquisition. It's like this every year. And blockbuster franchise QB trades shouldn't dictate our offseason process.

I think we'll make a few acquisitions if it's deemed a help to the team after the draft. In the meantime I just see it muddling up the team's process (hence, reinforcing that in general things slow down immediately pre-draft).

If you want to argue that the Packers haven't done enough so far, that is fair. But that's a different discussion.

Like in previous years? I know how it works. It goes

We need help at a position, for arguments sake, let's say D-Line

Pre-Draft it's "let's wait til the draft is over"

Ted Drafts a DT in the 6th round

Then it's "we have our guy, no need to go after any FA"

DT is thrust into a starting position or as a valuable backup spot on a D-Line which needed improvement.

People then say "Look, Ted's guy is starting or playing quality minutes"

We go 6-10

We say "Wait til next year", "If this would have happened" and "we had injuries"

I'm not saying sign a guy to sign him or do it as a kneejerk reaction to the Cutler signing but warranted or not the buzz is with Chicago right now. We need to make a run at someone, who fits our team, and make it a priority. Look at Barnett's comments, the team knows they need upgraded. The fans know it as well. Let's sign some mid-tier free agent who can upgrade a unit. They are out there.

We're a team that went 6-10, but we're not a 6-10 team. People disagree with that, and that's fine. But I believe it. I believe our guys believe it. I'm excited for the draft. I am one who thinks a change to the 3-4 necessitates the moving of some players. I also think that the draft holds more attention (or at least historically has held with TT) and that after it, if there are glaring deficiencies, we will make an acquisition.

It doesn't have to be now so in the meantime I probably won't be too critical.
