Life in the Green Bay Packers division got a whole lot more interesting thanks to the Chicago Bears desperate attempt to solve their more than half-century-old quarterback problem.

The Bears paid a staggering price to acquire Jay Cutler on Thursday, a move that will make or break the career of General Manager Jerry Angelo.

It will also provide a fascinating case study in the NFC North involving the Packers, Bears and Minnesota Vikings.

Unlike Angelo, Packers General Manager Ted Thompson would never, ever, trade two first-round draft choices, a third-round pick and a starting quarterback for anyone, even if that player had the initials J.C. and walked on water.

Thompson places a high value on draft choices and maintains a clear focus on the big picture. Its against his DNA to mortgage the future of the franchise like the Bears did on Cutler.

Angelo has some nagging questions to address: Did he pay too much for a player with a crybaby reputation? What good is a canon-armed quarterback if there is no one on the roster capable of getting open to catch his passes? With a depleted draft arsenal, how will he revitalize an aging defense that ranked 21st in the NFL last season in yards allowed, one spot behind the Packers?

But say this for Angelo: he identified a glaring hole at the most important position on his team and filled it. For better or worse, the Bears snared a franchise quarterback for the first time since the days of Sid Luckman in the 1940s.

In contrast to the dazzling fireworks in Chicago, Thompson so far this offseason has lit a couple of firecrackers in Green Bay by signing a pair of projected backups, safety Anthony Smith and offensive lineman Duke Preston.

The Packers expect to add some pop to their lineup later this month with four of the top 83 picks in the draft. The Bears have just one pick in the top 98 selections.

Thats part of Thompsons measured, steady approach to constructing a team. He wont panic, even after a disappointing 6-10 season. He refuses to sway from a mindset that places top priority on the draft and less emphasis on free agency and trades.

Its a philosophy that will be scrutinized like never before in light of the noise being made by the Packers division rivals.

A year ago Minnesota traded a first-round draft choice and a pair of third-round picks to acquire Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen, who helped the Vikings capture their first division title in eight years. Now its the Bears turn to bet the farm on an impact player that could turn around their fortunes.

The results this season in the NFC North will carry great significance and go a long way in determining the best method for building a team.

lmao I loved the JC comment, so true, so damn true! I also thought it was interesting that the Bears had a rank worse defense yet had more wins with a lesser QB.

Maybe it's our turn to overpay a player next year, if we will have a bad season.

Obviously, I'd liked some help at the D-line. Everyone along that line is pretty much a big question mark at this point, except for Cullen Jenkins.

I know we our D-line isn't meant to get alot of pressure, but Jolly and Pickett could hardly do anything against opposing guards and centers last year. This year, at least one of them is supposed to pick up two guys nearly every time. I see Jenkins working out great, he has great size, weight and rushing ability. If not for his body, he'll need double coverage just for his ability to get to the QB.

Lets put it like this, I really hope we'll sign at least one proven DE... and I'm really not that sold on Pickett either.

That said, I think we have some projects along the D-line. Two guys who where on the practice squad last season can be solid contributors, I guess. But still, question marks all over.

The big thing that people tend to forget though, is that we can't just go out and sign people. We're switching defenses, so Capers, McCarthy and Ted Thompson have to find out how our players will fit in that scheme and how they'll do. For all we know, Justin is looking great and Malone is the next coming at DE/DT.

Last I heard Jenkins is still having problems with his pec after the surgery (not a good sign).

My top 2 front D guys are jenkins and jolly. Both are good at their job IMO. People talk bad about jolly but he has done some good plays (batting balls down, tackles etc).

Should be some interesting games his coming year ...

as far as the bears having a better record then us and having a worse offense and almost as bad D ... like so many people talked about on this forum. Theres key plays that changed the course of the game.

Like the blocked FG of the bears game

What good is a canon-armed quarterback if there is no one on the roster capable of getting open to catch his passes?

To be fair, Devon Hester can get open deep to catch passes.

He just never holds on to them.

Bump his ass at the line, he won't be open. He's been shut down. The Bears need to stop using him as a WR and let him tear shit up in the return department. The guy is a freaking HoF returner and they are RUINING him at WR. It's stupid of them being so greedy.

You know why they're doing that? Because they see in Carolina, the Panthers were successful at converting Steve Smith to a full-time WR so they thought they could do the same. The thing is, Hester is no Steve Smith. da Bears haven't figured that out yet.

I guess replacing half of your coaching staff = staying the course.

That is the best move the Packers have made since McCarthy came here. If they can top that this year in the draft and/or free agency we're going to the Super Bowl.

Yes but Cutler is elusive and a great passer out of the pocket. Bumping the WR is fine if you can get to the QB but the more time Cutler buys the more time Hester has to get open.

I would actually do the opposite with the Bears. Cover 2 man under maybe. The problem there though is Olson and Forte are great catching balls and our LB's are pretty mediocre in pass coverage.

I'm telling you, Cutler to the Bears is alot more dangerous than most on here are making it out to be.

I'm not saying Cutler is Montana but he is a good fit for the Bears. They are literally 1 WR away from having the potential to be one of the best offenses in the league (sounds weird).

We don't really match up well with them in my opinion.
