Since we have alot of guys here who seem to know alot about PC's (And I'm not one of them), I thought I'd ask this here.

I noticed yesterday that my CPU fan was running pretty fast. It actually started quite some noise. I thought it'd have something to do with the CPU temperature, so I downloaded two programs to monitor them (I never totally trust one random program off the internet).

From what I know (Might be wrong here) anything below 45 degrees celsius (113 fahrenheit) is good. I noticed that, according to one program, all my cores where running around 60 degrees celsius though and that my GPU Diode, whatever that may be, is consistently at a high temp. Between 45 and 70 all the time.

I'm not doing anything but running some standard programs and those test programs. My CPU usage is between 0% and 7%, with all the cores showing some kind of small action from time to time and these are my current temperatures.

According to Everest.

      Moederbord 29 C (84 F)
      CPU 46 C (115 F)
      CPU #1 / Kern #1 33 C (91 F)
      CPU #1 / Kern #2 30 C (86 F)
      CPU #1 / Kern #3 30 C (86 F)
      CPU #1 / Kern #4 30 C (86 F)
      PWM 47 C (117 F)
      GPU diode 47 C (117 F)

According to Speedfan

GPU 47C
CPU 45C
AUX 47C
Temp1 47C
Core 0 43C

The rest of the cores are in line with Core 0

This isn't that bad, the fan isn't running at maximum speed either atm. 835RPM. Yesterday everything was heathing up after some usage though and, if I recall correctly, the fan was running somewhere around 1500RPM and temperatures where approaching the 70C mark (160 Fahrenheit).

Like I said, I might be entirely wrong and there's nothign wrong at all, but I though I'd just ask to be sure. I've had this PC for just half a year and really don't want to have it overheating and breaking down.

Not enough information.

Various chipset/motherboard/RAM configs run at different temps and speeds.

What is alarming on one system is normal on another. The noise is disconcerting, the peak temp is bothersome, and the RPM's COULD be abnormal or normal, again dependent upon the mfgr/set-up.

There is one good sign. I know of no motherboard not putting a hardware monitor chip on their boards these days. Historically they are not the most accurate things in the world, but they are good for one thing. You should get a warning from your BIOS if things are getting "heated", so to speak.

The results from the downloads are indicative of most systems operating normally in a no / light load condition.

60c would be considered high on many systems. There are other programs available that can give you some piece of mind with ongoing monitoring with very little "load" on your computer.

I would attack the problem a different way. I would establish which motherboard I had, then look online for that particular setup's "normal" conditions.

Well, I've looked on google, but couldn't find the motherboard's regular temp. On Abit's site itsself, it isn't shown. Or at least, I couldn't find this model. IP35P (Not the one of the site, I think, that one seems to be a next generation one). I did look on some site and saw that the emergency shutdown was at 90 degrees and the warning at 80. I haven't had a warning yet, so I guess I'm still on the safe side of things. CPU temp is 40 degrees in the BIOS on that screen, so I guess that's about average.

I did do some searching on my videocard aswell, Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT. The most important thing I found that it should not go over 70 degrees. Guess that's still ok. Don't know if there's any advantage or disadvantage to this, but it has one of those cooling blocks, it seems. No traditional fan.

I'm sorry that I didn't include enough info, like I said, I'm not that great at computers. I really do appreciate your help though. I don't know why I didn't do any more research myself at first, it's a pretty obvious thing to do. 😛

Ha!

If you have the board I think you got, (The P stands for "Pro" and there is your hint) You have one of the absolute best Motherboards possible for gamers. Integral to the design is a cooling bridge, relatively unique to motherboards, and there to allow gamer/zealots to overclock their CPU's. Unless you get total PS fan failure, I really doubt you could cook that one off without having messed with the chip speed.

Blaze away, my young friend! (imo disclaimer in the event you cook off, lol)

One more thing... if this is your board, type "Uguru" into a google search, then go back to your computer and look for it. I think it safe to say you can delete those outside software programs you downloaded, wouldn't you...I'll trade ya, btw. lol

Noise? Audible noise?

CPU fan or DVD/CD drive.

Noise? Audible noise?

CPU fan or DVD/CD drive.

"vegOmatic" wrote:

Well, I think it's from the CPU fan. It's not from the casing fan, not from the video card, since it has no visible fan and it's certainly not from the DVD drive.

It makes somewhat of a high-pitched noise when it starts to make more RPMs. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the CPU fan, especially since it always happens when I'm doing stuff that's more demanding for my CPU. I asume it has something to do with the cooler as a standard, that I'm just spoiled by an usually silent PC.

OMG

Possibility...He is unintentionally feeding into your fear.

WARNING!

Technical fix. Look carefully at your high priced box.

Focus.

Alleviate any distractions by centering it in your field of vision, ensuring no obstructions, right or left.

Ball fist.

Bring balled fist approximately 6" from right of case.

Pause. Energize. Smack right of case with enthusiasm. 60/40- noise issue solved.

Too scared? Then suck on the PS vents (power supply) with a vacuum cleaner. STILL failure? BLOW on them with a can of air spray.

I would be very surprised if that system was failing you. Even the power supply is high-end. What did you pay for your computer?

Hah, no, I'm not that scared. It's more of an annoying sound than a disturbing one. I always thought that a system would run at a much lower temperature than the ones I was seeing. Apperantly, I was quite off. I realized that after your first reply.

Oh, and I wasn't planning on hitting the thing. Although that did help my old one extent its life after years of faithfull service. The pixels began to do weird crap. Nothing fixes that like a good hit.

As for the the financial question. I don't know if you're actually asking me that, or if it's one of your slightly sarcastic jokes, but I don't really mind talking about financials. Especially not since I don't have to face consequences for stupid/impulsive buys. Both of those might've been a factor here.

I had a PC that was totally worn down. It actually didn't work at all anymore when I bought this one. Not to weird, seeing that it was the family PC at first and mine later. Anyway, it was a pretty horrible thing anyway. 2.0 Ghz, 1.5 GB Memory, Ati Radeon 9600, dented casing.

Then I saw this PC. I really wanted a complete PC, not going through the hassle of having it build, screwing around with it, missing stuff, broken parts etc. Just worked enough to pay for the thing....

2.4 Ghz Quad Core, 3 GB Memory, 320 GB Harddisc, IP35P Motherboard, Nvidia GeForce 7400 GT and some more stuff that really goes to deep or doesn't interest me... and some funky colored bolt-like thingies.

To answer your question though, 550,- Euros I think it was half a year ago or so. ::roll:

I was going to suggest cleaning vetns and fans..Computer for the kids makes sounds like that and I have to go in and clean it up and its fixed

first things first like LT said buy some compressed air and open up the case and blow everything out. Make sure you get all the fans real well. I suggest doing this atleast once a month if you live in a dusty area. Summer time i do mine once every 2 weeks because of windows being open and living on a busy street.

little side note did you know on a 32 bit system like xp your computer will only register 3.25 gigs of ram and vista is 4 gigs. Just thought i would throw that out there.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Mucky Tundra (23h) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.

Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
