Christian Watson gets to be a rookie this year.  So does Samori Toure.  As first year players, only so much will be expected of them.  They will be integrated slowly and gradually into the offense, if they play much at all.  Romeo Doubs, however, will not be regarded as a rookie.  He will play immediately and will be expected to perform like a veteran.

How do I know this?  No, I didn’t have a private conversation with Matt LaFleur.  I was merely listening closely to the comments of someone who would be in a position to know.  If anybody has an inside track on how the young receivers will be used this season, it’s quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  He’s been throwing to them for four weeks.  He has a pretty good read on Green Bay’s second, fourth, and seventh round draft picks.

This is what he says about Watson and Toure:  “I think you have to be real about the expectations with all of those guys, and at the same time hold them to a standard according to what they’re capable of at this time.”

Now listen to what he says about Doubs:  “Doubs has done a lot of really nice things.  I think the standard for him is not going to be the normal one we’ve had here for rookies in the past, especially in the last four or five years.  He’s going to be expected to play, based on his performance so far in camp.  So we’ve got to hold him to a standard that he is capable of reaching.”

If you’re a receiver for the Green Bay Packers, you’re not going to make your mark unless number twelve throws the ball to you.  And number twelve is not going to throw the ball to you unless you have won his confidence.  Just ask Allen Lazard, or Marquez Valdes-Scantling, or even Randall Cobb.  It took years before Rodgers felt good enough about them to make them targets on a regular basis.  But it appears the fourth round pick out of Nevada has already reached some sort of a comfort level with his future Hall of Fame quarterback.

“He cares about it.  He’s a great kid”, spouts Rodgers.  “He’s made some instinctual plays that you can’t really coach.”  One of the things QB12 likes the most about Doubs is his ability to sense how to ad-lib a route when he is not immediately open.  He referred to one play in the preseason game against New Orleans where Romeo ran his called route, and a defender was right there to make a play on the ball.  “Instead of drifting on it and letting the guy make the play, he comes hard back to the ball with strong hands.  You like seeing those plays.  It gives you confidence.  It makes you confident he might be able to do some things that are not on the paper.”

In the three preseason contests, Doubs caught a total of eight passes for 82 yards and two scores.  His leaping grab in the end zone on a fade against New Orleans was a highlight reel catch.  He was not, however, the leading receiver in the preseason.  Toure actually caught nine balls for 125 yards, and had, by far, the best yards per catch average of 13.9.  Watson missed a great deal of camp as he nursed a knee injury, but he’s been back since August 14, and probably could have played in the final preseason game, but the coaching staff elected to play it safe and hold him out.

Rodgers is certainly not down on Watson, but does admit the former North Dakota State star is a bit behind.  “He’s got a different skill set.  He’s a big body who can run.  We’ve just got to get him to be a little more consistent at tracking the ball down the field.”  One quality Rodgers noticed is how quickly Watson learns from his mistakes, and how he is smart enough to be a quick study.  “The other day, I told him what to do in the huddle, and it was something he had never done before, and he went out and did it perfect, and it’s those little things like that which help to gain that confidence and that trust.”

The big news early this week will be the roster cuts and the make-up of the practice squad.  But after that, the Packers must get down to the business of forming a game plan against the Minnesota Vikings at their place, always a tough assignment, on opening day.  In the process, they will decide which receivers are ready to play, and which will have to watch, at least for now.  I’m betting Aaron Rodgers will have a lot to say about who plays right away.  And judging by his remarks, look for Romeo Doubs to play an important role early and often.

Doubs will be held to that same standard as those that will be heavily relied upon. He is just ahead of the curve so to speak.

While he looks really good, he has had plenty of "rookie" moments in the preseason... I am hoping he can keep pushing forward when his confidence (and Rodgers') is tested.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
