GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Matt LaFleur wasted no time backing defensive coordinator Joe Barry on Monday even as frustrations mounted among the Green Bay Packers' players on that side of the ball.

He has no plans to make a coaching change.

"Oh, no, absolutely not," LaFleur just hours after the Packers' 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

The Packers' struggles on offense were easily predictable, considering they traded their best receiver, Davante Adams, to the Las Vegas Raiders and tried to replace him with journeyman Sammy Watkins and three rookies who would need time to gel with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

But a defense that featured seven first-round picks and several other high-priced free agents was supposed to help them survive until the offense found its way. Instead, Barry's unit has contributed to the Packers' 3-5 start.

According to sources close to members of the Packers' defense, players have grown frustrated with the defensive scheme and playcalling. One source said there has been "a declining confidence in the defensive scheme and what's being called, and it's led to overall frustration with the defense." Another source confirmed that sentiment.

LaFleur didn't say directly whether defensive players have shared that feeling with him or other members of the coaching staff.

"Well, first of all, it's impossible to please everybody," LaFleur said. "Everybody has their own opinions, their own ideas. It's like anything else in life. You have to get the staff on the same page, first and foremost, in making sure that everybody is confident in the plan and then you teach it to the players."

The latest defensive breakdowns came on Sunday, when the Packers allowed the Bills to score on five straight drives (three touchdowns and two field goals) that spanned late in the first quarter to early in the third quarter. They allowed 24 points in the first half before it tightened things up in the second half, following a season-long pattern of playing one good half and one bad one.

At one point, the coaches pulled starting cornerback Eric Stokes from the game in what LaFleur said was done "just to change it up." Stokes went back into the game on the following defensive series.

"I think we'd be foolish not to listen to our players at certain times," LaFleur said. "Ultimately, we have to make the best decision for our football team in terms of how do you go about winning the game? You know, there were some great moments and then there were some not-so-great moments. It was great that we were able to get a couple turnovers.

"I think from a consistency standpoint, way too many explosive gains, some poor tackling. I think we need to be more physical. I think you look at the teams that are toughest to deal with in this league, especially from a defensive standpoint and physicality, it jumps out to you. There were moments where we're not always getting that."

Barry's hiring in January 2021 to replace Mike Pettine came as a bit of a surprise considering his track record as a defensive coordinator. He had twice before coordinated defenses (Washington 2015-16 and Detroit 2007-08) and never finished better than 28th in the league rankings. The 2018 Lions went 0-16.

The Packers finished ninth in total yards allowed last season in Barry's first year but struggled at times against the run. They're ranked one spot higher, at No. 8, through Sunday's loss to the Bills but once again rank near the bottom of the league (25th) in rushing yards allowed per carry and have had communication breakdowns in coverage that have led to explosive plays.

"There's times we play good football and times we let it get away from us," Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark said. "Whatever it is, we got to correct it. We got to figure that out. I don't really have an answer for it."

Said cornerback Rasul Douglas: "I don't know what it is, but we got to do something to win."

Among the players who have drawn criticism is safety Darnell Savage, who was plagued by missed tackles.

"He's got to be better in those situations," LaFleur said. "We need him to, as a safety, you've got to clean it up. That's something that we're definitely going to address. Darnell knows it, too. Everybody can see it. We've got to be a little bit better and we've got to do a better job of drill it and putting that emphasis in that area because it hasn't been up to the standard that we expect."

Rodgers, who threw as much praise on the Packers' defense as anyone in the preseason, said the offensive struggles haven't helped out those on the other side of the ball.

"We've got to help our defense out a little better early in the game," Rodgers said. "When we went on a run back in '16, we started those games faster so we could play more one-dimensionally on defense. We just haven't done that. We haven't put up any points early in games to get our defense to have a chance to pin their ears back and get after the passer."

Same thing with Mo Drayton last year.

Long read for this guy. I think it's condemning that LaFleur was even asked these questions. When you are asked if you're going to fire your coordinator, that pretty much is the end, right? I mean, if it gets to that point, it has to be over.

How many times have we seen the Packers D make a good play on first and second down, only to see them give up a big play on third down?
It's frustrating. it happens way too often.

I commend Aaron Rodgers for sticking up for the defense.

That notwithstanding, giving up 7 yards per rush, with our starting linebackers both in the game, should indicate to anybody with a level of intelligence above imbecile, something has to change.

There is a lack of creativity and adjustment on the defense.
I may fairly be accused of Belaboring this point, but with our three strong quarterbacks, we should not be so strident about using our 2 deep safety scheme. We need more men in the box to stop teams that are running it down our throats.

When we were aggressive, as we were at the end of the Washington game. Our defense was really really good.
Go Packers!!!!

As the Peter Principle is in full swing in GB, why would we not expect MLF to back Joe Barry? He was LaFleurs choice. And so what if his defense only plays half of the game effectively? Heck, the GB offense only plays a half a game at best anyway. So why come down on poor, old, misunderstood Joe? Here endth the sarcasm.

With the exception RichB (who has done a C-plus job with STs), the rest of this coaching staff is far below average. Players who play poorly - like Amari Rodgers, Savage, Lowry, Hanson - are put out on the field regardless of how badly they perform. So, why should we be surprised when coaches - like Joe Barry and Steno - are allowed to continue with their horrid work? Its a consistent formula up and down the GB organization. And don't get me started with their tenured, President Mark Murphy? He represents of the pinnacle of the Peter Principle in GB.

Please indulge me one last piece of sarcasm. If GB is charitable enough to keep Joe Barry on as DC, why not bring Mo Drayton back as ST coordinator? Mo is just as bad as Joe. And it would give Rich B a chance to leave the hot mess of GB and find a real and competent football organization!

I can't see MLF throwing his DC under the bus to the press during the season. What good would that do? We'll have to wait and see what happens this offseason if our D continues to struggle like this.

I don't think it's "throwing someone under the bus" when the person isn't doing their job.
To me it's stupid and being pig headed to not accept that you made a mistake and to rectify that mistake immediately.

Martha Careful (22h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (23h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.

Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
    Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.

dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
    Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
    Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
