-Cutting a punter that had the highest net average of any Packers punter in 38 years, for a guy off the street without even working him out, a week before the season started.

-Keeping Derrick Frost on the roster for 3 months, when it was obvious he couldn't do the job.

-Poor coaching. (Too many stupid penalties, undisciplined team, inability to make defensive adjustments.)

-Playing "not to lose" late in games and in the red zone at times.

I didnt follow the pack that closely early last season - which punter was this and why did they cut him?

I agree with you on the part about playing not to lose rather then to win

Don't be fooled, Jon Ryan was not that great of a punter as those stat numbers might make one think. Bottom line, he was unreliable and very inconsistent. He could punt it 80 yards one time, then 17 the next. That's still a pretty damn nice average and that's what Jon Ryan is/was. The Packers got rid of him because of his lack of consistency and poor ball placement. He couldn't corner kick at all. He could punt the hair out of the ball and it was exciting as heck to watch WHEN it happened. He also would out kick his coverage units all of the time because he had very unreasonable hang time.

They brought in Frost because he was "consistent" and could corner kick very well. However, once he signed with us, WITHOUT A WORKOUT, he was terrible and should have been released after the first few games.

The Packers thought they were improving a position based on the Special Teams coach's high praise for Frost and it backfired miserably.

Reasons for 10 losses.
Aaron Rodgers not having more experience, holding the ball too long at times in the pocket and not picking up reads as quick as he WILL in the coming seasons.

Ryan Grant's injury killed our running game. He ran scared for much of the season, I believe. He just looked tentative and head down instead of head up.

Injuries to Cullen Jenkins and Atari Bigby hurt us big time. Atari makes WR and TE's fear the middle and Cullen is a force on the DL. Losing Barnett hurt us majorly as well. He's a excellent field leader.

The offensive play calling needs to be more aggressive and we need to have that KNOCK OUT punch in our offense and our defense. We lacked the killer instinct to put teams away and dominate them last year.

Special Teams, covering, returning and kicking all sucked at times and was inconsistent.

Moving Woodson to safety was a mistake in my opinion. He shuts down a WR, let him do his job and make someone else step up. We moved Woodson which weakened our CB and gave us a unnatural player at Safety. I'd rather one weak spot then weakening two spots.

A soft defense, weak toilet paper'ish. Not nearly enough blitzing and attacking.

Precisely. Another thing to bear in mind: Jon Ryan remains one of the most-blocked punters of the past few years.

People were so wowed by the glitzy gimmicks (the fake punts) that they ignored the realities you outlined above.

The Packers' mistake wasn't in cutting Ryan. It was in failing to do their due diligence before bringing in a replacement.

It still blows my mind that that one coin flip was allowed to stand after hitting one of our players on the helmet. There should be a rule invalidating coin flips if the coin hits anyone or anything before striking the ground.

So very many things go into a season, but I'll take a stab and see if I can't be a little less one-sided than some (seriously, y'all will take your base argument and apply it to any old thing, it seems).

1. One very messy off-season. PLEASE NOTE: It doesn't matter whose 'fault' it was - the point is simply that there was so very much to pull the team's focus from preparing for the season. I do think this took a toll. How's it being addressed? How do you address such a thing? It'll be a little better this year, but it will take time.

2. New QB. He's good, but he's young. Only the willfully blind would ignore that there was a drop off in terms of experience, and that drop off did affect how things went in games. To what extent I wouldn't presume to know, but I'm sure it affected McCarthy's coaching, and I would bet that some reads/check-downs/play changes at the line didn't occur as they would have w/ Favre. A subtle change, but one I'm sure was reflected in play on the field. How's it being addressed? Experience. The more he plays the more he'll learn, and those subtle improvements will occur. And the more he gets that experience, the more likely it will be that McCarthy will adjust back to a more aggressive approach (or, as may well be the case, Aaron will learn when to change that run play to a skinny post or something like that).

3. Thompson and co. over-estimating their roster. I will say that I don't necessarily have the facts to back this one up; it's more of a gut feeling, based on the assumption that they must have thought Harrell was going to step up and therefore Williams was expendable. Now, Williams definitely wanted more than he was worth, but I do wonder if Ted would have paid that had he had a more realistic sense of where Harrell was at. In any regard, with a couple injuries a strength turned into a liability, and you don't want your liabilities to be along your front lines - thus begins a domino affect, one that we all witnessed. How's it being addressed? Raji. Whether he fulfills his promise remains to be seen, but he was touted as THE DT in this draft, and they got him. IF Harrell can be healthy enough to be a part of the DL rotation, we're looking at that becoming a strength again.

4. Luck/Injuries. Yeah, yeah. "No excuse!" I love that one - like a bunch of pasty wanks on the internet all become Lombardi or something. Let me be clear, here: It is not up to me to make excuses for the Green Bay Packers - I'm just a fan of the team. I'm not making any excuses, but you tell me how good our D was supposed to be when it was missing KEY pieces from last year, to wit: Cullen Jenkins, Atari Bigby, Nick Barnett. That's taking our most crucial D-lineman, our starting MLB and our starting SS out of the game. No team has the depth required to plug that many holes, not to mention holes that size - sorry, they don't. Additionally, we had injuries to our O-line, our QB (he gutted it out, but he was clearly affected for at least a couple games), our starting halfback, and a receiver who was just becoming an important piece in the offense. That's a LOT of injuries, folks, and it's not like they affected marginal players. How's it being addressed? We have a new Strength and Conditioning staff. That's really the most you can do, other than hope you won't get hit by lightning 2 years running. Luckily, the odds are in our favor.

All the above is my own opinion, obviously. But I do see reasons for some optimism, even if I think more could be done in terms of personnel.

52 yarder was indoors, that's on Mason. The one against the Bears, was too low of a kick. Nothing divine about that. Mason admitted it and Mike even publicly said the kick should have been higher.

ILikeThePackers39 makes great points. All are valid. +1

Now...

I have to duplicate his points, they are fact. However I would nail it down and expand on "The Why" a little.

1. The Brett Favre Vs. The Packers challenge.

This set the tone for the season. It screwed up focus at a time when foundations are set, the field is cultivated and planted for the crop results. It was at the worse time. Going into camp. A time when players gel, Coaches coach and build trust and belief in "The Room" Having 8 year old children screaming obscenities, Fox News sending in the Greta Factor, and the whole horse and pony show ruined any team building that could have been done.

2. Coaching. (Mike)

The pre season hoopla may have had an effect, and I think it did on giving Aaron the opportunity to let it ride. M.M. may have been too freaked out to let him fail, and thus played safe in way too many games. We were punting (With out a decent punter.), or running it up the gut, when we should have been going for it more times than I can count. (You can factor that into the point set forth herein above. (The Brett Favre sabotage.)

3. Coaching (Defense)

Horrible. Nuff Said, although injuries did play a factor I know, It should have been a minor factor not a major factor. Discipline and focus on the defense was non existent too many games.

The Bottom line is this... Last years team was not all on the same page.

They were not a team, they were teams with in the team, based on the confusion, turmoil, and uneasiness of a new QB, a new direction, a new plan.... And that was responsible for at least 5 losses.

11 and 5 would have happened if Brett just shut up and mowed the fricken lawn.

I believe that.

Brett wanted to play in Minny last year... He wanted to stick it to the Packers... He got his wish, even though he was in New York.

Now... That takes nothing away from everything he did on the field in his long tenure as one of the greatest Q.B.'s to ever play the game.

He will always be one of the best. One of the best ever to play the game of football, and one of the best ever to play the game of self centered narcissism with vengeance.

Packers 6-10 Final Score- Brett 1 Packers 0
