I think this is a good idea. Hawk has always looked so musclebound. It sounds like he may be a little too fanatical about weightlifting.

Interesting article. In one respect it's a problem you like to have - an unquestioned work ethic. In another respect, excessive bulk can inhibit things such as speed, so glad to see Redding controlling that.

muscles need oxygen. the more muscles you have, the more oxygen your body requires. you want your players to be strong, but not at the expense of stamina. eventually a player will hit a point of diminishing returns.

I read this and go back to the initial Redding articles speaking of functional strength and conditioning.. I think this is a trickle down aspect of that philosophy bleeding into the core roster.

Now.. will this help free his mind to play more attacking instinctive ball? 😉

Yeah, that's what it comes down to, and there could be a connection here. If bozz's suggestion is on the mark, it's possible that Hawk has been playing conservatively in order to preserve energy. He would never admit that, of course, and neither would anybody else on the team, but players who have stamina problems typically hold something back, maybe without being aware that they are doing it.

I wonder if Hawk has had more big plays early in games and then has tended to tail off toward the end. It kind of seems that way to me, but it would take some research, and access to game film, to see if there's really a pattern there. That's the sort of stuff that NFL teams keep track of, though.

I would like to see Hawk looking just a little leaner and rangier--more like Brandon Chillar, actually. More like a football player and less like Charles Atlas.

I just laughed reading the title. I can imagine Hawk going nuts not being able to lift so he starts lifting stuff in the streets or something.
On another hand, I can see where Hawk is coming from. If I miss one day out of my 5 day period of any type of exercise, I feel like something is missing.
He is already strong enough, this is a good idea for sure.

I have one slight problem with the article: it completely neglects the fact that once the regular season starts, players often lose a lot of the muscle they have.

With regards to AJ, I'm not sure it makes a ton of difference if he is still working out for an hour or two on off days. He should account for that loss of muscle mass in some way.
