Okee doke, boss - I'm typing with one hand and didn't know about the shortcuts. My bad.

Are we seeing the early signs of Jeff George Syndrome: holding the ball too long looking for deeper options, ignoring the open stuff underneath, and taking sacks? Or are the short plays not being called? How much freedom does Rodgers have to change the play to a short pattern? I know coach and player both bear some responsibility, but I'm not convinced one way or the other who bears more. Is it that the plays are there and Rodgers isn't seeing them/is ignoring them? Or is it that they aren't being called, and Rodgers doesn't have the freedom to audible to them?

I think there are two questions here:
1. How many short passes v. long passes made. Here, OP IMO has pretty good evidence for proposition that GB isn't out of ordinary. (though they may be for the quality of OL they are being thrown behind: how do those other teams' OLs compare with ours?)

2. How many short routes v. long routes are being called. First one I saw point this out was NSD in the chat sunday -- it's one thing to throw long; it's another thing to throw long when everyone is running routes 10 yards and deeper.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

From what I can see in the plays, since they usually cut the WR off after 7 yards or so, there is nothing under most of the time. FB coming out late now and then, or RB in the flat. WR seem to be running right off the TV Screen every play.

The way the WCO usually works, is that there are certain audible plays that are practiced each week. Those are the plays that are eligible to be switched to. So the big question is what plays does McCarthy use for audibles?

The first TD sunday looked like it was an audible and it was 3 deep routes.

Not ruling out that Rodgers may or may not be switching from plays with short routes, but that would be now and then, not the majority of the time.

Yeah, I've thought their offense looks a lot more like the old Raiders vertical passing game than the WCO recently.

Wasn't sure if it was just my perception because of all of the sacks, because my perception was we weren't running as many slants, or if it was off-base.

Whoa. Before you say the short passing game is a myth, there's a HUGE difference between a 10 yard pass and one at or behind the line of scrimmage. You can't combine those.

"macbob" wrote:

Yeah, there's also a difference between hitting Donald Driver on an 8 yard slant and watching him take it to the house and throwing 60 yards downfield to Jennings in quadruple coverage. Do these stats differentiate between the two?

"nerdmann" wrote:

Yes. They were distance the ball was thrown, not distance of the play. The splits read "Pass Thrown 1-10", etc. I just used the attempts stats, but they had completion stats at each of the distances, along with Int, TDs, etc.

beast (21-Apr) : I haven't looked into the QBs, but some have suggested Maye has some of the most extremely inconsistent tape they've seen
beast (21-Apr) : Well it also sounds like Patriots are listening to trade offers, not that seriously considering any, but listening means they aren't locked
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Maye needs to be AFC
Mucky Tundra (21-Apr) : Not liking the idea of the Vikings getting Maye
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Vikings HC joked that he may or may not have sent flowers to Bob Kraft. That's where rumor came from.
beast (21-Apr) : Can't tell if this is real or BS, but some rumors about a possible Patriots/Vikings trade for #3 overall
dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
