I remember Lynn Dickey throwing for 400+ yards but we only scored 14 points.

Yards are meaningless. Points are what wins games.

There's always going to be cases like that, just like cases such as the Colts earlier this year where they had few yards, lots of points. It goes both ways.

The team that scores more points only wins half of one third of the time.

The defense has improved considerably this year, but I think they've improved from bad to average. They got lit up in both Vikings games, they struggled against the Bengals, and they collapsed in the fourth quarter against the Buccaneers. In between, they've piled up impressive numbers against the likes of the Lions (twice), Browns, and Rams. The game against the Cowboys was the only one where they went toe-to-toe with a good offense and whipped it.

The good part is that the defense has played very well for three weeks in a row now. But I'm not yet ready to say that they are an elite defense, or even a very good one. There is a lot more work to do.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them meaningless, but they are overrated. If I have four 80 yard drives that end in FGs, and you have two 40 yard drives ending in TDs, you win 14-12 even though you were outgained 320 to 80. I've always wondered why the NFL ranks offenses and defenses by yards and not points for deciding who the #1s are.

Yes, yards for a team rank offensively and defensively is over rated.
I'd like to see the system by points given up by the defense, with also the defensive scores involved in there too. Same for offense.

Edit, lol I get jumped on for mentioning tackles because its not an "official" stat, then get jumped again when I use an official stat. I'm starting to think you guys just like arguing with me.

IMO all stats are cool to look at; especially when it shows the packers in a good light or in a bad light when Im trying to prove something 😉

Yards are a valuable stat for an offense or a defense, because they tell you a lot about field position, and to some extent, clock control, but they are definitely overrated. What they need to do is come up with a rating system for offenses and defenses that is based on a simple formula that combines points, yards, and turnovers. They've had a QB rating system for years, so there's no reason they can't have a rating system for this.

Don't forget about starting field position. If your offense can't do anything and is always punting, and your special teams always gives up big yards, it doesn't matter if your team only gives up 200 yards per game plus 2+ turnovers, they can and will still give up 21+ points per game.

I've been hard pressed to find starting field position stats mentioned just about anywhere, but it's absolutely huge on both sides of the ball.

If I didn't argue with people on the internet, I would be left arguing with myself. And losing more than likely.

Actually I agree. Yard in itself does not mean a lot. Bend don't break gives up yards and FG's. Not that we are doing that this year. I personally prefer, don't bend, don't break, and kick ass approach.

Beyond Brett Favre, Who has picked apart this defense?

Beyond Cedric Benson, Who has ran over this defense?

I would say the answer is nobody for both questions. The defense is playing very well. Forget about the rankings for one second, take a look at the play on the field. Is it better than last year?

The obvious answer is yes and it's not even close. The strides this defense has taken has me excited about the possibilities going forward.
