its funny looking back... those guys were my heroes as a kid, and i had no idea how bad they were as a whole... eddie lee ivery, paul coffman, mark murphy, ezra johnson, phillip epps, mark lee, brian noble, ken ruettgers... didnt matter that most of em sucked... they were packers.

Well, Coffman was a Pro Bowl TE. Really solid TE.

You and I are probably around the same age. James Lofton at the time was my favorite player ever and he had the misfortunte of being born two decades too early. Had he been born today, his stats would be unreal. Best deep threat ever to play the game.

The sad thing is, the NFL wasn't so pass friendly like it is today. QBs took hits. WRs took hits. I remember one WR for the Patriots becoming a quadriplegic from a hit. Totally different game back then.

The Chargers opened up the air, then Dickey followed suit and got lost in the craze when Dan Marino started putting up numbers that dwarfed both Fouts and Dickey.

Now Marino numbers are routine. This year alone, Manning, Brady, Schaub, Rodgers, Brees, River, Romo, Favre, Ben R, Flacco, and Warner will all put up Marino numbers.

Remember when Dickey threw 4000 yards? I think he was like the 3rd person ever to do that. Now it's routine.

Completely different times.

Darryl Stingley  was the Patriots WR who got hit by Jack Tatum. His spinal cord got compressed, breaking his fourth and fifth vertebrae and making him a quadriplegic.

It's pretty sad.

You know what's impressive, if you want to look at QBs historically? Bart Starr's TD - Int ratio and his QB rating. It's better than Dan Fout's, better than Lynn Dickey, better than Johnny Unitas and better than Y. A. Tittle's.

Starr was before my time and thus I can't really rate him.

Plus, he played in an era where the receivers got smacked around all the way down the field. So stats are going to be different.

Sometimes I envy guys like Cheesey who actually got to see him play. Had I seen him play, I may argue Bart Starr is the best QB ever. But I can't. I would not have enough evidence to support my case.
