The new league season doesn't start until after the season and playoffs are over.. the uncapped season doesn't begin until the 2010 season begins.. which is not in 19 days.

Not for pay purposes.

The 2009 cap ends on January 2nd. Anybody signed on or before the 2nd will be under the auspices of the 2009 salary cap. Anyone signed on the 3rd or later is assigned to the 2010 season.

So what you are saying is there is a gap between the 2009 and 2010 league calendar and season? That would be interesting.. but under past season.. the new league doesn't begin until sometime after the Super Bowl..

If that would be the case.. then the players contracts would expire as well.. thus making some of the players working without a contract through the playoffs? So does FA kick in then as well?

Got a link.. I would love to read how they justify that accounting.

My understanding is that the 2010 is still being enforced under the current CBA.. thus it would make the league calendar still valid and the 2009 season to be played out in the same fashion.. as in the league calendar still is invoked throughout the playoffs. Along with the 2010 season.

It is as simple as this.

The collective bargaining agreement states that a team may sign a player up until the last Saturday of the regular season under that year's salary cap.

As an example---

In past years, what teams would do would pile a bunch of unlikely to be earned --but classified as likely to be earned --incentives into contracts in order to "carry over" that cap room into the next year. Of course, there is no reason to do so when there is no cap in the subsequent year.

There is no present provision in the CBA regarding a salary cap past the 2nd, other than any contract signed past the 2nd will not count against the 2009 cap. There is no restriction against signing a player on the 3rd or beyond, just that it does not count towards the 2009 salary cap (in our case, an estimated 5 mil + remaining) hence...uncapped.

In years past, teams were required to be "in compliance" with the cap on or before January 27th of the subsequent year. There is nothing to be in compliance "with" on January 27th, 2010.

But those contract would still have an impact upon the 2010 season.. and if they can get the CBA established.. it could lead to issues based on that new agreements.. we are still under the CBA.. so to my thinking there is no loop hole so to speak..

There is no doubt (in my mind) that there is going to have to be provisions made for those signings. My bet would be that the signings will be "grandfathered-in" ---

As in, OK--- "Those Packers went crazy during the uncapped period, but that shit has to cease, and this is the new cap, even though we are going to have to allow those contracts to stand as written" (he he--as if Ted is going to break the bank) Remember--I keep saying "can", not "will".

Do I think we will start signing people on the 3rd? No. We will wait. My point being (and have made this point in a multitude of threads) is that everyone keeps focusing on that 15 mil in cap room, as if this is what we have to spend to get these guys signed. FORGET the F$CKING 15 mil.

It never existed as available money. It existed in available authorization to spend money. That authorization is about to become meaningless, in less than 3 weeks.

But that is the argument I have.. I don't think there is a gap as you think there is.. maybe.. but I haven't read anything to that effect.

I see a poll and a pool here:

Poll: when do you want the packers to start signing people not currently on their roster?
My response: within 72 hours of the end of the team's final game, whenever it is.

Pool: when do you think the first packer signing of a non-practice-squad-type player not currently on their roster will be?
My pick: June 15.

Where are you getting that date from?

This 2009 season continues until the 2010 season begins.. just because payroll will end on the final week of the regular season, I don't believe the 2009 NFL season expires on this day. Contracts don't expire until after the league calendar ends..

The gap I am talking about is the accounting gap..

(beating head to a pulp against computer) mostly kidding-this is a pain in the ass to figure out--more kidding- and you think they are going to do so in 19 days, lol--sorry

Ask yourself this question.

If the last day to sign a player under the 2009 salary cap is the 2nd of January (which it is) What happens if you sign him on the 3rd of January?

Ah, you might ask--Then why even do a deal right now?

They had to hit the minimum, for starters.

In week 10, (deadline for the inclusion of pro-rations into the 2009 season) I published Brandt's article (somewhere, lol-now you know why I have that boring "reference" thread) He mentioned "league year", as I recall, but here is something that stuck out to me at the time... He ALSO said, "There are no accounting rules established for 2010" (maybe not precisely, but damn close.
