What Whitt did not know, given the fact that Shields had spent the first three years of his college career at Miami (Fla.) playing wide receiver and had just 10 games of cornerback experience as a senior for the Hurricanes, was how well he understood the position.

The answer?

He had no clue. Trust me. No clue, Whitt said bluntly. There was one day, I almost lost my mind."

And now?

Write this down, Whitt said of Shields, the Packers No. 3 cornerback in their nickel defense. Sam is going to be one of the top corners in this league in two years.

Joe Whitt is definitely a good coach. I mean, it could be just coincidence, but when you craft a star and a future star from two undrafted players, it speaks volume about your coaching.

I agree with your statement. Also says a lot about the player.

I love the quote by Whitt--it's exciting--but I continue to think that it's almost impossible to know how good any of the position coaches are. With head coaches and coordinators, you can see some of their work, but the position coaches do their work in practice. All you can judge them by is their reputation, and it's even hard to tell about that, because coaches always praise one another.

That's why when players succeed in learning their craft I tend to give all the credit to the players. Shields has been very impressive, right from the moment he returned that interception for a TD in the Family Night scrimmage. That was his coming-out party.

I'm with Greg. I'm not saying Shields is no good, but this is the same guy that coaches Jarrett Bush, Pat Lee, and Brandon Underwood. If we give Whitt the credit for Shields do we then blame him for second round pick Pat Lee's underwhelming play? I'd rather credit the player for his skill, tenacity, and hard work.

Underwood and Lee are too often injured to say anything about.

Jarrett Bush isn't as bad as some claim he is.

Charles Woodson never won defensive mvp until Whit Jr was his position coach.

Whitt also developed Tramon Williams, who, a few years ago, was FAR from what he is now. I'd sure like to believe that when Woodson is gone, we'll have Shields to step into his spot as "one of the top corners in the league", but until then, I hope he works his ass off and does as much as he can instead of coasting into the spot because his coach has said this. This goes back to what Jacob, errrr, bozz_2006 said..... "I'd rather credit the player for his skill, tenacity, and HARD WORK." It doesn't just happen. He has to make it happen.

Shields has two advantages that the coaches can't help with. Speed and instincts. Sam said he ran a an unofficial 4.18 in college and he has great instincts.

I would guess being a former receiver helps him.

If Bush had the talent or Lee and Underwood were consistently healthy, the coaches would probably do something with them too.

Bush is actually doing a decent job this year. As much as I hate to admit.

I think Bush is doing well because they're using him in the only way you really can--as a de facto safety. They're not throwing him into one-on-one coverage deep downfield. He always seems to be playing zone coverage on short routes and routes over the middle where he has help. As long as they confine him to that role, he should be okay.

What's really remarkable is how well our DBs are playing without getting a lot of pass interference calls (knock on wood). Maybe they got all the penalties out of their system in that awful game in Chicago.

During training camp and in weekly practices, they have put a lot of emphasis on cutting down on penalties. Since they are not installing a new D and struggling to put the O-line back together, they have more time to work on it.

It seems to be having an impact.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.

Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
