Green Bay Packers need to win last four games in order to capture first-round playoff bye
BY MIKE VANDERMAUSE MVANDERMAUSE@GREENBAYPRESSGAZETTE.COM DECEMBER 6, 2010

If the Packers (8-4) win their final four games, including the season finale against the first-place Chicago Bears (9-3) at Lambeau Field, they will capture the NFC North championship. In addition, the Packers would claim the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round playoff bye because they own a head-to-head tiebreaker edge over Philadelphia (8-4).

If the Packers win out and tie the Bears at 12-4, both teams would have the same division and common opponent records. But the Packers would claim the NFC North title based on a better conference record.

The high-stakes nature of the Packers-Bears regular-season showdown on Jan. 2 is exactly what the NFL had in mind when it changed its scheduling formula during the off-season to ensure division games would be played late in the season.

I think everybody likes it now the way it is shaping up, said Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday of the Packers-Bears matchup. I like it. It will be great when we get to that point to see where both teams are. Playing Chicago the last game of the season, I think its awesome.

But McCarthys only focus now is on Sundays game at Detroit, and for good reason. A Packers victory over the Lions, along with a win over Chicago, guarantees that Green Bay would win any tiebreaker over the Bears.

That means the Bears would either have to finish with a better record than the Packers or beat them in the season finale in order to capture the NFC North crown.

It is expected that the NFC South champion, either Atlanta (10-2) or New Orleans (9-3), will earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC. But the second-place finisher in that division will have to settle for no higher than the No. 5 seed that goes to the wild-card team with the best record.

There is one scenario in which the Packers could beat the Bears in the season finale but Chicago would win the tiebreaker. A Packers loss to the Lions, coupled with a Bears win over Minnesota in two weeks, would give the Bears the edge based on a better division record.

After that game last night call me the wettest blanket (no, I didn't piss it) in the history of Packers fandom...

...but I really don't think we can pull this off.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

This post right here is why I harp on balance and being a complete team.

Not that we can't win or be effective doing this or that.. but there will be times over the course of a season and especially in the playoffs where teams will force you or you will force yourself via poor execution to execute outside of your wheelhouse.

To win every game you can and set yourself up for the absolute best possible position to win the championship as you can.

Home field is a huge advantage.. not a necessity, but an advantage to getting to the end goal.

Hence why I go a little postal when we can't execute in all phases of the game and be a complete team.

Because sooner or later those weaknesses will be exposed and the road will become tougher.

If we can convert a yard on the goaline successfully in Atlanta, we have a cushion.

If our special teams don't fail in Washington and Miami.. we are not in this position.

If our offensive line can come out of the gate and be effective game one.. we allow Rodgers and company to play effectively against the Bears.. we are not in this position.

If you want to hoist the Lombardi and bring it home at the end of the year.. you have to be a complete team and execute in all given game situations as possible..

Why?

To make the road to the goal as easy as possible and increase the odds.

Simple and nothing more than that.

*Edit and addition

Now before I get scalded.. I don't expect to win every game.. but that doesn't mean my expectations shouldn't be to capitalize on realistic opportunities that we face over the course of the season.

If we beat the Giants and have already beaten Philly would we not get the #2 Seed if we win the North and whoever wins that Division also finished 11-5?

If we beat the Giants the best they can finish is 11-5 and if we lose only to NE we will have a 5-1 Division record and three more wins in the NFC.

I don't see where it's an absolute that we HAVE to win out to get the #2 seed. Now I am HOPING we win out and think we have a good shot to but I think there's still a way to lose a game and get the #2.

You're right. If we win 3 of 4 with our 1 loss being to New England we'll probably get the 2nd seed. The South winner will likely have 1st, the West is irrelevant, and so it will come down to the North winner and the East winner. As you said the Giants could finish no better than 11-5 so we would go ahead of them. If the Eagles win the division we would need them to lose 1 more game and considering they play a resurgent Dallas twice, Minnesota once, and the Giants once I'd say there is a good chance they drop one of them. This of course assumes we actually win the North because Chicago could also finish 3-1 losing to us and take the division (and the 2nd seed).

I thought that was the case. I will say the odds of us finishing 11-5 are much greater than the Bears finishing 3-1. Teams have an uncanny ability to play their worst against these guys but I am saying the voodoo doll has all the pins it can take.

It all starts this week for them. The only way they beat NE is if the Pat's plane goes down. Even then it would probably take four turnovers, ten penalties, and overtime. That's the only way they ever get by good teams.

Anyways the average fan that only reads the headlines of these articles should know the basis of this one is just not accurate.

Win out and beat the Bears in the last week. I don't see that as impossible. Or if the Bears lose one, we can lose to either the Giants or the Patriots.

Zero2Cool (5h) : $170 guaranteed. This might impact Jordan Love
Zero2Cool (5h) : Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million extension
Zero2Cool (9h) : I know we moved on. That tidbit just makes me a touch happier.
Zero2Cool (9h) : Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line
Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
