I would go with Shields, because a bad nickel back (e.g., Jarrett Bush in 2007) can put a major hole in a defense, while a bad OLB can be covered up to a large extent. An OLB is never on an island the way that a DB is. But both Shields and Zombo have far exceeded expectations.

I'd have to go with Shields. He has played very good if you ask me. WAY better than Jaret Bush.

Zombo just seems like he can't get get consistent pressure on the QB. I'm not trying to bash him. Just giving a reason for why I take Shields.

An interesting question. After 8 games the answer would have been Zombo. Now the answer will likely be Shields.

Shields continues to improve and is more isolated whereas Zombo is part of a combined front seven play and has less individual attention as plays may not feature him.

Nice thing to think about.

Shields has played well all year I don't see why you would say Zombo would get the nod for the first 8 when Brad Jones was still in the mix.

I like Zombo a lot but Shields is even better. He's been playing the position like a guy who's played it for 5 years.

i don't care who gets the nod over the other, i only admit that i love to have "this" to discuss. other teams barely get their drafted rookies on the field and ted found 2 udfa's, who contribute well on a consistent basis.

Yep. Now we know why so many teams wanted our castoffs at the end of training camp. They got beaten out by players like Zombo and Shields.

I would have to say Shields. Zombo has been getting better at his pass rushing though and has been strong against the run all year. If Zombo keeps having improving he could surpass Shields.

The cool thing about these guys is Shields only played CB the 1 year in college and I don't believe Zombo ever played LB in college. They both should be able to improve quite a bit from where they are at now.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
