Packers, Chiefs take step back with poor backup plans

As usual, NFL football didn't disappoint when it came to twists and turns in Week 14. One team broke a long losing streak with a gutsy performance. A rookie quarterback from a 1-AA school led his team to a victory while other backups caused an immediate collapse for their respective teams. Tough weather conditions have officially become a factor in the season -- having no impact on one team yet frustrating many others. After two teams found success with interim coaches, it finally looked like firing a head coach in season was a bad idea. The halftime adjustments of one team were very impressive; another team is running its way to the playoffs.

1. Quick collapse is possible

Jon Kitna is a real backup quarterback and he's worth every penny Jerry Jones pays him. Kitna can win games for Dallas, unlike what happens when other backup signal callers were asked to play this weekend.

If the starting quarterback goes down with an injury, the team can't afford to fall apart. The payroll for a 53-man roster is in the neighborhood of $100 million. And that means teams should have what it takes to identify and secure backup signal callers that can keep them on a winning track. A real backup QB costs about $3 million a year - and he's worth it. Ask the Steelers players how important their backup QBs were when Ben Roethlisberger served a four-game suspension and the team went 3-1.

In a matter of minutes, the Packers went from a true playoff contender to a team that couldn't beat the Detroit Lions with backup Matt Flynn under center. With Aaron Rodgers out of the game due to a concussion, the Packers generated one field goal in the loss to Detroit.

The Chiefs lost their starter, Matt Cassel, to an appendectomy and lost their offense under Brodie Croyle. Kansas City still leads the AFC West, but couldn't score a point against the Chargers. Croyle threw for 40 yards in 17 attempts, and the team was 0-for-11 in third-down conversions.

There are 72 quarterbacks that have thrown at least one pass in the NFL this season. It is imperative to have a quality backup on the roster.

2. Another rematch lesson

With eight division games played last week, I warned there would be more splits with the loser of the first game winning the rematch. The result: five splits and three sweeps. Entering Week 14, there were another five rematch games. Result: Four of the five teams that lost the first game were winners this weekend. The Dolphins topped the Jets, Chargers dumped the Chiefs, 49ers avenged a loss to Seattle, and Detroit took the second game over the Packers. In two weeks, nine of the 13 rematch games were splits - 69 percent of the rematch games went to the loser of the first game. Keep that in mind in the final three weeks!

3. Let it snow!

The Patriots came into Sunday's game in Chicago averaging 40 points over their previous four games, but snow and cold suggested something else would happen. Not so, as New England operated as if it were a bright summer day, scoring 33 points in the first half and finishing with 36 points while allowing the Bears to score just seven. If you did your homework on the Pats in the cold or snow, it should not have been a surprise. In "snow" games since 2008, the Pats are now 3-0 and have outscored opponents 142-14. That is an average score of 47-5! If you look at Patriot games in weather less than 40 degrees in the Tom Brady era, the team is now 10-1. It's starting to look as if home-field advantage throughout the playoffs for New England is close to a lock, and that means January games at Foxboro. I'm sure the team will be excited to see snow, wind and cold.

4. Mess in Denver

The Vikings and Cowboys terminated their head coaches and there appeared to be some decent improvement in the performance of the players. I wonder why professional athletes need a wake-up call like a coach firing to play better, but as one Viking said of departed coach Brad Childress, "It wasn't Brad's fault but he took the blame and we had to get going or else."

Well, the plan to fire Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, at least after the first game without him, seems to have backfired. The Broncos may need years to get things right and after watching the team get torched by the Arizona Cardinals. With a rookie QB (John Skelton) beating them 43-13, it made we wonder a few things: 1) McDaniels was a much better play-caller than what was left behind; 2) It's time to play Tim Tebow and find out how far away he is from being an NFL QB; and 3) The players better take responsibility for what's going on or realize a new head coach will turn this roster over like the Seahawks turned over their roster last year.

5. Keep chopping wood

I talk with Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz every week and I am so impressed with his vision for the team, the kind of players he has brought together as the foundation of this roster and most importantly how he never offers an excuse for the hard times. The Lions are all focused on the idea of building a team that will win. Using a third-string QB? No excuse. Losing their defensive captain, Kyle Vanden Bosch? No excuse. Placing eight players on injured reserve? No excuse. Waiting for QB Matt Stafford to heal well enough to play/ No excuse! Detroit had lost 19 straight division games and 10 straight to Green Bay, but on Sunday, with more injuries and possible excuses for losing, they won. You don't have to be a Lions fan to appreciate what Schwartz is building in Detroit.

6. They love the second half

The Tampa Bay Bucs are just a group of young players, coaches and front office guys that believe in themselves and don't panic if things don't start out smoothly. Second-year QB Josh Freeman is one of my favorite players in the NFL and the sky is the limit for him. He can only go as far as his teammates can go and they are on the move. The Bucs were losing 10-3 at halftime in Washington yesterday. They squib kicked the second-half kickoff, recovered it, then went from 92 yards passing in the first half to 174 yards in the second half, scoring 14 points. Once again, Freeman led the team to a fourth-quarter victory.

The Bucs aren't a top six team yet and still sit on the outside of the playoff bubble, but they are close and there is no quit in this group. Tampa came into this road game without its center, its best offensive guard, its top cover corner and starting safety. Right now, they are 8-5 and only have one team with a winning record left on the schedule. The Bucs are a year ahead of schedule in their development but don't tell them that because they are thinking 11 wins and a playoff berth. And losing at halftime doesn't mean a thing to them.

I always wonder how these writers pick their stats. The last 3 snow games? Why not the last 5 or the last 10? Three is such a small sample size that it's hard to draw many conclusions from it.

What do you people think. Is a backup quarterback really worth $3 million a year?

The only backup that could have played behind that Oline is Micheal Vick. There's not too many of him out there.

Not every team is going to have a starter quality back up quarterback. Not every team even has a starter quality starter. Saying 1 team has a good back up doesn't prove another team messed up because their back up isn't as good when over half the other teams back ups suck ass.

That's where I'm at with it too. There are only so many good backups to go around. And it's not like the Cowboys immediately lit the world on fire when Kitna took over anyway. They didn't get anything going until the coaching change. For all we know, Flynn could play better after several starts, but I hope it doesn't come to that.

A little premature to label Flynn inadequate when his only real game exposure came in a game where the OL failed MISERABLY across the board. But, these douchebags need to have something to prattle on about. Sadly, I like Kirwan, but this is just pure garbage.

Exactly.. remember back to Rodgers first significant action against the Pats a couple years ago to now.. Flynn needs to play more to become proficient.. the only thing the slows down the game is playing time for a player.

Sunday is not on Flynn as a whole.. start looking around that offense for others that didn't do there thing to help get us a W.

Flynn made on bad mistake.. and that was the Driver throw in the endzone.

I don't post these articles because I agree with everything the authors say. I post them to provide reading material and discussion fodder.

I think it's way too early to cast judgment on Flynn. Would any of you have felt comfortable behind that line? I think too he needs more playing time to see how he handles himself. Any other game than that one, I don't think his performance would have been as scrutinized.

He steps up into the pocket and makes quick decisions better than Rodgers. His accuracy is not nearly as good as of now though.

Zero2Cool (8h) : $170 guaranteed. This might impact Jordan Love
Zero2Cool (8h) : Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million extension
Zero2Cool (12h) : I know we moved on. That tidbit just makes me a touch happier.
Zero2Cool (12h) : Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line
Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
