Like it or not, the default interprettation when the President speaks is going to be that he is speaking in terms of national interest. What he speaks about, when he speaks, regardless of what he says or how well he says it, what he says is going to be interpreted as a statement about or on behalf of the nation and its interest.

1. Chief of State

Roles: This role requires a president to be an inspiring example for the American people. In some nations, the chief of state is a king or a queen who wears a crown on special occasions, celebrates national holidays, and stands for the highest values and ideals of the country. As the American Chief of State, the president is a living symbol of the nation. It is considered a great honor for any citizen to shake the president's hand.

Examples of Behavior in Roles:
* Awarding medals to the winners of college scholarships.
* Congratulating astronauts on their journey into space.
* Greeting visitors to the White House.
* Making a patriotic speech on the Fourth of July.

It's nice.
But it is what it is, a speach.
Someone wrote it for him, and he read it.

All presidents make speaches. Some are better public speakers then others. It's one of Obama's good points. He's good in front of a crowd. Which is good if that's your main job, being a public speaker.

How much did it hurt to write something semi-nice about Obama, Cheesey?

It didn't hurt at all. I don't hate the guy. I'd sit and have a beer with him. But i'd also tell him how i feel about his politics. As i do with my friends.

Hmmm.. so lets go back to the previous president look at a couple of speeches that according to some, he should have had things of more interest to speak about. ;)

Space Shuttle Tragedy.

Or the closest to the complaints filed here.. Virgina Tech Shootings. Yep.. Bush was on hand.

Virgina Tech Shootings.

But I remember some in a fit that Obama didn't speak in Arlington verse Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery... even though many presidents before him skipped speaking all together..

Point is.. if you don't like a certain political head.. you can find things to nitpick about.. when in reality every president or politician is going to address situations as they see fit.. even if it falls outside the scoop of their office.

I am disappointed in the job and direction that Obama has lead this country over the past couple years.. but that isn't going to make me criticize him for a point of compassion that he has shown in this event. He felt it worthy.. so be it.. other presidents have done the same in the past.

I didn't have an issue with Bush's speeches at Va Tech... I am certainly not going to have an issue here.

I agree Shawn.
I'm glad he was there to speak. To me, the nation needs to see it's leader at things like this.
I'm not picking on the fact he was there, not at all.

Could an argument be made that he almost needed to be there, as this was an event.. a public gathering invoking freedom of speech and were gunned down because of it?

It was a political gathering speaking upon topics such as Medicare and reimbursements..

I hate politics because comments like this, make me think, what was the point of this comment? And it's because of my own political ignorance that that question is even asked, lol.

I guess my response would be, so freaking what? He's blasted for not going to the funeral of the unknown (sorry I butchered that but you know what I mean) but he's not able to be commended for doing this?

It's crazy how it appears so difficult for us as a nation to be positive (rationally) about our president or hell our government.
