Elmore needs to show more than what he has if he is going to make it.

Green Bay draft picks have a pretty decent chance of making the team as rookies - even the later round guys.

Ever since general manager Ted Thompson took over in 2005, all but six of Thompson's draft picks have landed on his final 53-man roster to start their first NFL season.

And that makes the immediate future of sixth-round linebacker Ricky Elmore difficult to predict.

Undrafted free agent outside linebackers Vic So'oto and Jamari Lattimore played double the number of snaps of Elmore in the Indianapolis game Friday night, a sign that they have leapfrogged Elmore.

Assuming Clay Matthews, Erik Walden and Frank Zombo - whose status is somewhat up in the air because of a broken scapula - are the top three outside linebackers, that leaves two spots, maybe three, for veteran Brad Jones, So'oto, Lattimore and Elmore to fight over.

It's hard to imagine Elmore as the odd man out given Thompson's track record of keeping his draft picks. But with the cut to 80 due at 3 p.m. Tuesday and the final cut to 53 due at 5 p.m. Saturday, the evidence is against him.

And from Elmore's perspective, that's nothing new.

He said the naysayers have been calling him out his whole life: that he wouldn't get a scholarship to a Division I school coming from a small high school or that he wouldn't be able to compete at that level in college. He played at Arizona and leading the Pacific 10 in sacks last year.

"It puts a chip on my shoulder, makes me work harder," said Elmore. "I like to prove people wrong."

There's no shortage of criticism in Green Bay, either. Days after Elmore got to Titletown, someone on the Packers' staff gave him three news articles and asked him to read them out loud. They summarized that Elmore would not make the conversion from defensive end, his position in college, to outside linebacker in the NFL.

"They asked me, how does that make me feel?" Elmore said. "I was just like, I've been told this my whole life. I got here, and I'm not going to leave.

"It doesn't matter who is in front of you or who is behind you. It's how you fit in the team, how you help in certain situations. Last year they had seven outside linebackers. You never know."

Roster spots can be won with special teams play or because of injuries, he added. But before that, Elmore has to prove he can make two transitions: to the NFL level and to linebacker.

Elmore lost 10 pounds leading up to the combine in February to arrive weighing 255, so he fits the size as the hybrid linebacker. He's still confident in his pass-rushing ability, but admits that he needs time to work on his coverage responsibilities.

"D-end or outside linebacker, it doesn't matter," said Elmore. "They're both the same thing. You just have a little more responsibility as an outside linebacker. You still rush the passer and then sometimes drop into coverage to cover receivers."

To me it looks like Elmore talks a bigger game than he plays. I had high hopes for him as a worthy compliment to Clay. Maybe he'll still do it but from everything I've read he has not shown much. It would seem he would be a practice squad candidate. Yet I don't know how to take his comments in that regard.

The author writes, "It's hard to imagine Elmore as the odd man out...." Um, no it isn't. It's obvious from the preseason games that he is not ready to play in the NFL, and I'm not hearing good things about him in practice either. I doubt that he is even a practice squad candidate. At best, he looks a couple years away from having a chance to play in the NFL.

I really liked this draft pick but haven't heard anything good about him all camp. I was really excited when he was training with Clay's dad in the off-season but it doesn't seem like it is paying off right now. It is going to be tough for him to fit into those two spots and that isn't saying much about him with Brad Jones in contention for one of the openings.

Best chance for him to remain on the roster is good special teams play.

Elmore could also be a gamer. He could be a lot better in real action than in practice.

It all remains to be seen what the coaches think. I don't trust the media's opinion. They are wrong way to often. I also don't trust the fans opinions much.

No offense.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

I was excited about the value of Ricky as a draft pick.

He is changing from DE to LB which is tough enough with little NFL coaching. In preseason games he just seemed slow to react.

He has a lot of athletic ability but now comes the old question of do you keep a guy based on his "potential".

Only the coaches and Ted Thompson know enough to make the decision.

As to attitude Ricky has been a star athlete all his life and has a lot of confidence. Does that spill over into an ego problem? I don't think so.

I don't think he has shown enough in preseason for any team to put him on the 53 so he may be a practice squad guy.

Scott Wells and KGB overcame being cut. I hope Ricky can too because I like the guy.

The most upside I've seen from a rookie is the 7th round TE Taylor.
I know Cobb and Green have talent but Taylor has shown more than the Mackie award winning 5th rounder Williams.

Zero2Cool (16-May) : From what I've read, it's all Jets , not us.
CanPackFan (16-May) : Will there ever be a time when Rodgers' whacko views will not reflect on GB? He is the past, thank god.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.

Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...

Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.

buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
