It is just further proof that no one in Green Bay is safe on the roster.. there is no sacred cow anymore.. if you are playing consistent solid ball and remain available to the teams needs... you very well may be replaced.

Hodge - Albeit not his fault, but he couldn't stay healthy.. we had 7 Backers.. probably one too many.. my guess is they were trying to deal one of them for some type of return value.. no takers so they choose the player with the most concerns surrounding them at LB.. Hodge, even though very talented was the odd man out.

Ryan.. inconsistency was the killer point here... I liked the kid, he had a moxie about him.. however as stated before, inconsistent.

Notice a trend happening in Green Bay? If you have a occasional "DOH" moment on the field, you are subject to being replaced with a another player with less "DOH" moments. I think a couple players better keep the moving boxes close by.. I think they might be needing them in the near future unless they clean up their games in a hurry.

Very well-said, although I still question the Ryan move, because Frost doesn't really seem any better. One thing that's for sure is that Ted is one cold-blooded S.O.B. I mean that in the best possible way.

How is that a good thing? Everyone on the team liked Jon Ryan. He was a solid punter. He was our holder. He ran for a first down after breaking not one, not two, not three, but four tackles. He also picked up a nice first down in preseason of this year. He can handle the cold, which actually matters as the season winds down.

How is being a cold-blooded S.O.B. a good thing? There is a thing called chemistry. People liked Ryan.

What I meant is that Thompson doesn't let sentimentality get in the way of his personnel decisions. He keeps the best players, period. I agree that Jon Ryan has a lot of heart, and I'm very disappointed that he was cut. But if Frost can kick the ball better than Ryan (which remains to be seen) then it was a good move.

A lot of people thought it was highly questionable for Thompson to draft a kicker in 2007 after Dave Rayner had come in and done a nice job for us in '06. Then in training camp Rayner and Crosby were just about equal, but Thompson cut Rayner anyway. By the end of the season, Crosby was one of the best kickers in the NFL and Rayner was out of the league.

With that story in mind, I'm being very cautious about criticizing this move too strongly, even though it looks like a bad move from where I'm sitting.

Greg - Ah, gotcha.

Then you and I agree. If he turns out an improvement, then I'll be happy.

are you honestly saying that Ted Thompson doesn't think chemistry matters? I think quite the opposite is true, that he believes chemistry is the most important thing... and i bet you'd agree. Just look at our roster, how Ted Thompson goes about player acquisition; building through the draft, being relatively inactive in free agency, and tell me that chemistry doesnt matter to thompson.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of Frosty's directional punts. Lets hope he's good in the snow, and most of all, no more 15 yard shanks.

In pre-season I remember two Ryan shanks for sure. I'm not sure why people seem so shocked. I thought he was average at best last year and definately pulled off one like you describe above a little too often for me. He seemed to often have two or three thirty six, thirty seven yarders and then one good one. He could get a big one off from time to time but had way to many in the mid-thirties for my liking.

If Frosty can kick in Washington he can kick here. That's got to be one of the worst places for kickers in the NFL.

Hmmm...... I could have found some other positions that needed more help than Punter.

DT maybe? Only have three true DT's even though Cullen Jenkins was a darn good DT before the Pack moved him to DE.

TE maybe? I don't think Humphrey gets a case of the dropsies sometimes. Plus he is never proven to be very durable.

OL maybe? Wells nas been having a problem with his back since OTA's. Colledge is not too good. Sitton needs to get healthy. I just don't like Moll, he is versatile, but during training camp he always seemed to be picking fights with people.

Punter??? Not on my list. Not only is he a punter and a holder..... He is a Badass.

But when it all comes down to it...... In Ted Thompson We Trust

After reading this, I feel better!

Thompson noted the biggest improvement he's hoping to see at punter is consistency. Ryan had two solid seasons in Green Bay, but the strong-legged CFL product had his ups and downs, and had struggled particularly in poor weather.

In Frost, a fifth-year veteran who spent one season in Cleveland and the last three in Washington as a full-time punter and holder, the Packers hope they've found a punter with better directional skills and the ability to perform in difficult conditions.

"He looks like the kind of guy that can kind of adapt in those situations, can kind of drive the ball when you need to and you have to against the wind," Thompson said. "Some of that factored in."

In a horribly windy game last December in the Meadowlands against the New York Giants, Frost had to punt nine times and averaged a respectable 37.6 yards (35.3 net), with three punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

With temperatures in the mid-30s and wind chills in the mid-20s at the evening kickoff time, Frost estimated the winds reached 40 miles an hour during that game, as evidenced by quarterbacks Todd Collins and Eli Manning combining to complete just 26 of 77 passes on the night.

"Those games are hard to make it out with terrible numbers sometimes," Frost said. "Just a brutal situation. We had a couple of those."

Despite NFL averages (41.4 gross, 36.4 net) similar to or slightly below Ryan's (44.5 gross, 37.0 net), Frost's directional and situational numbers are better. In his four seasons, Frost has placed 97 of 317 career punts (30.6 percent) inside the opponents' 20-yard line, while having just 24 (7.8 percent) go for touchbacks. In two years here, Ryan placed 35 of 144 (24.3 percent) inside the 20, with 23 touchbacks (16.0 percent).
