It's only a bargain signing if the GM puts a winning team around him and the HC let's him play to win games.

So far neither one of those has happened. AR's contract really can't be judged for another year or two, let's see what happens.

Im not saying it wasnt a bargain Dfoster just saying its not fair to compare his contract to qbs that are proven winners to a guy that got handed a crap full of money for what 8 full games. Of course Manning and Rivers will get huge contracts because they have proven them selves thats common sense.

Ok edited : I should say it will be a bargain if Rodgers plays at the same level for the rest of the contract if he keeps putting up good numbers but don't win the games i think it would be a waste.

Waste is dead money. A 680k base salary, along with less PRSB than we are obligated for contrasted with, say Brett Favre next year, (1.4 million for Brett), coupled with 83% of his future pay dictated by performance... I really am having a comprehension problem as regards what folks are not getting here.

No No No -- not a Brett argument-- We have 50 some dudes we are taking dead money cap hits for... this is simply the best comparison when you are looking at the pro-rata signing bonus issue

I havent read thestory yet Z just what you took out and i don't understand how they can even compare Manning and Rivers to Rodgers both of those qbs have been proven in the NFL, Hell Eli has a superbowl ring and Rivers was one game away from the Superbowl last year while being on one leg. I just don't like all the praise they are giving for Rodgers after one season in which his team won 6 games. I know people will say if just me bashing but if you open your mind you would see the same thing.

I think Andrew Brandt knows what he's talking about. If they waited another year to sign Rodgers, his contract would almost be up, then he would be a free agent, and all of that work developing him could've gone out the window. You don't get far in this league by only signing players who are proven. Anyone can do that. The good teams are the ones that are managed by people who can anticipate who's going to be good and sign them before they hit their prime.

Also, a lot of Rivers' and Eli Manning's wins can be attributed to the fact that they've played on teams with very good defenses, which Rodgers did not.

Hahahhahaha thank you ILIkE im glad i have my own label i worked hard to get it lol. But the only thing i don't understand about your post you said young established qbs, so one year as a starter makes you established? If thats the case we had tons of established players in the NFL, hell Samkon Gado was a established running back then when he finished the season with the Packers. I'm not bashing Rodgers at all i just was stating that The Author was very bad at comapring Rodgers contract a starter for one year to qbs that have been playing and one has a superbowl ring and the other was in the championship game also both are still alive in the playoffs again this year. And then they use the most overstated word in the dictionary "potential" every damn player has potential that dont make it. I understand we had the money now so it wasn't all that bad on taking the risk with Rodgers hopefully it works out and we have a decent qb for a few years.

"dhazer" wrote:

Fair point, I probably could have come up with a better word for it. I mean "established" in terms of being secure in their position - like it or not, Aaron is securely set as the starter for the Packers, as Manning and Rivers are securely in place as the starting QBs for their teams. Contrast with someone like TJack in Minnesota, who is not secure in his position.

I don't think it was a comparison of players. Just used them because they are the starters that are likely to see new contracts.

I don't think the plan was to get Rodgers extended this year. But that it ended up that Jennings wanted to wait, leaving a big sum of cash that needed to be spent or lost cap wise. Since Jennings said he wanted to wait, the only other player that could realistically use up that cap space was Rodgers. While Ted Thompson may be good at moving money, I don't see him shifting another close to 20 million forward.

Now, there is an element of risk. But the contract is built very well to limit the future damage should the worst case appear. And if as we all hope Rodgers continues to play as he did this year, and improve in some aspects, it will be huge bargain.

I don't want to think of what would have happened, had they waited, and Rodgers had another year like this last. And went into the open market.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

damn i was just stating that it wasn't fair to compare the qbs and that made this thread take off lol.

And please please people give up on blaming the record on the defense it was the whole team that lost the games this year. I Will not get back into that discussion again.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

The reason for part of that is Brandt wasn't comparing the talent presently.. he was comparing the value of the contracts when those two re-ink this offseason.. Hell Warner on the tail end of his career will probably get a contract in the short term greater than Arod..

That is the point Brandt tried to make.. not saying Rodgers is at the same level as Rivers.. honest opinion.. even though Eli went on a tear in the postseason last year and followed it up nicely.. if you look at his whole body of work at QB.. one could make a case that he is over-rated at this point and time.

so your gonna sit there and say that we wouldn't have won more games this year, even if the defense played better?

Its just a shame we can't be proud of our QB and wish him the best. Hope that he succeeds and lives up to this very smart contract. Nope the same few people have to hope he fails so that they can whine about TT.

Andrew Brandt may be a little biased, but its still a brilliant outside source saying we did something good management wise, and yet people still think they know more sitting at home on the computer.
