Given our recent draft picks, what then if we perform better in the 4-3 on passing downs than on the base 3-4 over the upcoming season? Would we continue to press towards developing the 3-4 or should we revert back to the 4-3 given the personnel we have?

Given our recent draft picks... I'm starting to think the major difference between our 3-4 and 4-3 will be Kampman's hand on the ground.

Considering how they played last year, I don't think this is that far of a stretch.

Seriously though, I'm not concerned about it. The idea of introducing the 3-4 is to diversify the defensive playbook so that offenses can't predict what we are doing. I'm starting to think the reason so many teams were able to drive in clutch situations against us last year was because they "figured us out" defensively and used the plays they knew would work in key moments of the game.

Yeah one exception with Carolina where Delhomme can just loft the ball down the field and Smith will 9 times out of 10 come down with it.

That was definitely a game that should have been won, along with the two that Mason should have given us, and we are division champs, albeit with the 21st ranked defense.

I think as long as Al Harris and Aaron Kampmann are on this team, we will use a 43 look a good portion of the time. Al is a press coverage specialist and Aaron is a 43 end. Everyone seems to have an opinion on AK adapting to the 34 and that's fine, but at the end of day, switching to a true 34 is unfair to those two players.

Get used to the Packers drafting linebackers, but they don't necessarily need to be high picks. It seems to me Pittsburgh plucks alot of good players in later rounds, which is one reason they are playoff contenters annually.

I think what we will see is the Packers 3-4 not the steelers ravens patriots or any other Dom is a smart and capable coach and we will get something that is purely ares. Also many assume that AK can't survive as a ROLB I for one think he will not only survive but thrive. We will see stunts twists and presnap movement that even if not run to perfection will b very hard for offenes to decipher. I predict Kampy will finish with 10 plus sacks and atleast one pick. As far as AL goes he will be used as is. Press coverage can work with the 3-4 just cause it is not used in other teams versions doesn't mean squat
I am therefor I think.

Nice - +1. I'm confident that Capers knows more than all the posters on this board (many of whom are very knowledgeable, mind you) combined, in terms of how to put a defensive scheme in place and how to implement that scheme. If AH really didn't have a role in this D he'd be gone already.

The trouble is that we fans are seeing it as it develops (sort of - like seeing a concert from the back row; you miss some important stuff), rather than simply seeing the results on the field. Too much room and time for us to speculate, which I think leads to a lot of the hand-wringing.

What teams "figured out" late in games is that we couldn't get to the passer. In the Titans game were hanging right in there until the end and one of the best rushing teams in football moves the ball down the field by... passing it and beats us.

We gave Chicago the game simply by allowing Orton time to pass the ball late in that game. You put a rush on him and he's toast.

We lose the Carolina game on two long bombs dead down the middle and you can't let a QB sit back there and let him deliver the ball right on the money 45 yards downfield.

People talk about Arod not being able to lead us back late in games. The opposing teams did to him what we could not do to them. Get to the QB. They KNEW in all those games Arod would have to whing it if we were going to win and they brought the dogs on Arod.

Many of those late game INT's he threw coincidently occured while he was on a dead run. That's what YOUR SUPPOSED TO DO TO TEAMS late in games when there's little time left.

I watched game after game that we lost where the opposing QB was left back there to do what he pleased with three minutes left and, yeah, given all day guys like Bishop or our safeties are going to get beat there.

Goes to show any QB can look like a hero if you give him enough time.
