Well the 16m is just how they move the money around, it's not like hes going to make that every year. It's the same reason Ben R got 27 mil last year and Jared Allen got 21m. 2007 Dwight Freeney made 30m lol.

What they make in a single year of their contract doesn't really factor in to whether they were overpaid or not.

I thought Ted Thompson would wait a little longer to consummate the deal, since in the grand scheme of things, Jennings had no real leverage, but I applaud him for completing the negotiations before it became more of an issue at camp -- in the media, if nowhere else.

Both Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings have now served as shining examples of the kind of behavior Ted Thompson apparently likes to reward (as contrasted to the Williams situation). Other players on the roster should sit up and take note.

And as has already been noted, if it wasn't abundantly clear before to the skeptics why Thompson wasn't making a splash in free agency, it's blatantly obvious now.

its okay to over pay for a free agent that you are not sure how will fit in your system ( for the most part) and how "coachable" he is, or how much of a locker room cancer or non cancer he is

but Ted better not dare over pay for a player that has been on your team for a few years and has nothing but tremendous upside

Makes sense to me

I think the confidence Thompson has expressed in this team is awesome. He's let them know that despite the less-than-optimal season last year, he hasn't lost faith and he's given them another chance. Can you imagine how good that must feel in the locker room -- to know their GM has their back, that he isn't going to launch a mass slaughter simply because one season didn't go according to plan? That's the kind of boss I'd like to work for anyway.

Dana Point, Calif. - Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson usually tries to argue that he's willing to take part in free agency if the price is right, but on Tuesday Thompson made it pretty clear why the Packers have been less active than at any time since he took over the club in 2005.

Despite coming off a 6-10 season and being in the midst of a major schematic change on defense, the Packers are not a team with a lot of glaring needs, Thompson said. If there's an absence of conviction in Thompson's eyes that his current roster is capable of big things, you'd be hard pressed to detect it.

"I am confident in our team," Thompson said during a break at the NFL owners meetings at the St. Regis Hotel. "I think we have a fair group of players that now can play the game and play it well. I don't think we played as well as we should have last year. Notwithstanding, I think we have a good group of players who make up our team."

Thompson's commitment to building through the draft might be the strongest of any general manager's in the National Football League, and since he's holding nine picks this year, including the ninth pick overall and four in the top 83, it would be logical to think he's expecting a couple of starters out of this class. But he's not even certain he needs to do that.

"I don't know that's a particular goal," Thompson said. "It would be nice. It kind of depends on what's there when it's our turn to pick. We're pretty solid in our starting lineup."

That kind of confidence about a team that went 6-10 last season might surprise a lot of people, especially when you consider he has a roster that features more unproven young players than it does high-performing veterans. Still, the Packers lost a total of seven games by four points or less last season, including a pair in overtime, and lost seven different starters for three games or more to injury.

Well after reading Non's post it makes me think of Ted Thompson in another way, he reminds me of a parent that won't admit their kids have problems. He says their is no glaring need for the team i have to argue that. We have a whole o-line that needs upgrades and that should be a glaring need.

I see also they talk about how he don't like free agency and that he was saving up to sign the players already on the team. Some players deserved to be paid yes Jennings and Rodgers was good signings but i still believe you need to mix it up and make a splash in free agency at times.

Do we want to be in the class of elite teams like the Pats and Steelers than we need to get some free agents.

But i will give Ted Thompson some credit that he seems to have changed his style since the devil has left green bay.

Tom Pelissero, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers FS Nick Collins and OT Daryn Colledge could be the next players to have their contracts extended by the team.

Why the hell would we worry about extending Colledge?
