Great post. You should post this at packersnews.net. Harrell is a god over there; and if you say anything about cutting him, you will be called a "whiny fan" among other things.

I personally just don't really like to complain about things. I like my football drama-free lol.

I don't think wanting the Packers to cut Harrell is "complaining". I just don't think he will ever contribute anything to the Packers.

Time to cut the losses and let him go. It's obvious now not only can he not make it through a 16 game season, he can't make it through preseason.

It's a wasted pick.
Oh well....can't win them all.

Since he's ineligible to start the year on the PUP list, he either needs to be cut or put on IR at the end of camp if he can't make it back. Normally I'd be all for cutting him out right, but since his base salary this season is so low and there'd be minimal savings if the team did cut him, I wouldn't be against throwing him on IR and let him try to come back next spring if the team feels there is still a chance he could contribute in the future.

Everyone keeps saying what a great kid this is -- all the more reason to let him go. I think it verges on cruel to put this kid on IR because it just sets him up for disappointment and failure yet again. Why put him through the physical and emotional grind of a year-long offseason preparation program that's probably doomed to failure, when he could be applying the millions he's already earned toward furthering his education or starting his own business, foundation, or charity -- following dreams he can attain. In any ordinary job, your supervisors don't keep you around if you can't physically perform: they do what they can to do right by you (if you're lucky) and they bid you farewell. I think it's only fair to accord Justin Harrell the same treatment.

Justin cannot go on the PUP for the reasons mentioned.

Esoteric little rule that will apply here as well.

He is not eligible to be placed on IR, either.

WTF is Foster talking about, some might wonder.

Any player with less than 4 years service will be "waived-injured".

This means he must clear waivers, which means another team can claim him off waivers. If no team claims him, he will then be placed in IR status for the Pack, with full pay.

Relatively minor point, but wanted that out there in case they do place him on IR---

...For the inevitable poster wondering why we were willing to expose him to waivers, and blaming Ted Thompson for that also (editorial, that last)

I think the odds are 65/35 he goes that route, the whole cost/benefit thing, or another analogy. Pot odds.

Isn't he only making like 400K this season???

Just store him on IR and reevaluate him in the offseason.

We got nothing to lose.

I don't care how great of a kid he is. The fact is he has a track record of utter failure. From all appearances, he can't do the job, and he's being a drain on the Packers' resources, while taking up a roster spot that could be occupied by someone who is healthy and able to perform the function of defensive lineman. The Packers need to cut dead weight, not drag it along behind. It's time to end this kid's misery, give him an injury settlement, and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Maybe it's time to give Soi or Bledsoe another look.

Have him retire for 2 or 3 seasons, avoiding professional or competitive sport and then make a return. At that stage he'll only be 27 and could still play about 5 years if he has as much talent as a 17th overall pick warrants. It's clear his back needs more than a single offseason to repair, IF his back can heal at all. He sounds like a pretty mature kind of guy, and if he works hard he can return to the game he enjoys. But as far as the Packers-Harrell connection is concerned, if he can't go this season it'll probably be the best for both parties to part ways.
