To be honest Id rather they cut one of our fullbacks instead of smith (even thou I like all our fullbacks).

Don't get me started, Thompson and McCarthy are gonna find out that keeping 3 FBs was a luxury we simply couldn't afford.

P.S - What was the point in signing Martin and keeping Bush if they don't actually want to start them because of injury. You certainly get that feeling with Bush. Is a Special Teams player all he's good for? And that's worth taking up a roster spot? If special teams was a one man game then okay.......

I can't blame our special team disaster on Bush, but I'd rather keep a better safety then a better special teams player with how often our safeties go down. Smith screwed up a lot but at least he made a few plays too. I only see bush screwing up.

Hopefully we can get a chance to draft Taylor Mays in next year's draft. He's a monster.

I would agree Bigby cant stay healthy and thats a concern, but having Martin on the roster gives the Packers a safety net.

"Zero2Cool" wrote:

So why in the hell are we working out safeties if this guy is a safety net?

If they truly felt this way.. we still have three healthy players that can play safety..

Bush
Rouse
Martin..

Safety net my ass.. it (cutting Smith) was a mistake and the Packers know it.

"pack93z" wrote:

Smith was not a mistake to be cut. And the Packers are working out potential Safeties because that's the smart thing to do.

Bush? Seriously? You're going to sit there and try to BS by saying Smith being cut was a mistake and then say we have Bush? Yea not happening, it's early, but not that early to pass that one by me.

To agree with your Smith being cut was a mistake. I'll say if someone was to be cut, it should have been Bush, not Smith. If that's the mistake you're talking about. I'd say right on.

I still can't believe how so many are so high on Anthony Smith who is a freaking BACKUP on the RAMS just because he made a handful of plays in PRESEASON against BACKUPS!

I must have missed something and that's very likely. If everyone says it's true, and I don't, the odds are not in my favor. I'm going to stick with what the staff has said and what others who watched him practice have said instead of believing in the pre season rarity of splendid play making against backups.

And more to why we are working players out. Collins, injury. Bigby, Injury. Rouse, Injury. We often hear injury after any one of those names. It would be inefficient not to be working players out to support the cast.

I think you missed the point..

Bush is a liability as a safety for this team.. but yet he is on this team as a CB/S in the Packers eyes.

Apparently the Packers are concerned with safety play even though they have 3 players on the roster that were kept for this very reason.. being versatile enough to play a number of positions including safety.

I contend it was a mistake to cut a player (Smith) that might have made a assignment gaff here or there but has several years of experience in this system and most would have more confidence in him verse Bush or Martin at this point.. maybe even Rouse.

There is no denying it.. Smith outplayed all safeties in preseason except maybe Collins.

Can Martin fill that void.. we shall see.. I am not holding my breath on Bush.

We have to work with what we have and if all goes wrong Woodson is going to be our safety and Tramon Williams our DB.

Smith > Bush = Yes.
Smith > Rouse = No way.
Smith > Collins = Never.
Smith > Bigby = Never.
Smith > Martin = Unsure.

I think the roster should have been. Collins, Bigby, Rouse and Smith. I think the many mistakes Smith made would have decreased over time. That's my thought.

But I understand WHY the Packers cut Smith and I don't think, with that train of thought, it was a mistake. They surely felt that Collins, Bigby and Rouse would be available and if not had a safety net with Martin. The problem? INJURIES.

Sorry, I can't buy the whole mistake thing. I watched the damn games for crying out loud. I liked the plays smith made, it was exciting, but I'm just not able to pull the wool over my eyes and say he was the second coming of Troy Polamalu. I mean, after all the Steelers did cut him.

And I didn't watch the same games?

So tell me.. I want examples of where Smith blew an assignment?

You speak of Smith being assignment unsure.. a number of times Rouse was out of position on Sunday.. for an example.. Rouse got to shallow on the Coles TD. He ran right through the zone that Rouse was suppose to occupy.

Bigby? What has Bigby shown since 07? He is a hitter, but definitely not the most reliable in coverage assignment?

I seen a few bad angles by Smith in Preseason that I can remember, but can one really say that he was outplayed by Bigby or Rouse? Nope.. granted both were dinged up.. but isn't that more the reason to keep someone that flashed in the defense in the preseason for insurance.

Smith blew his assignment on his big interception on preseason. The offense was running two WR up field between the sideline and hash mark. Smith was responsible for deep coverage on that side of the field instead Smith was playing center field.

Derrick Martin is very, very fast. You guys all know this, right? You also know that he ALSO had a very good pre-season, yes?

And you do know that the biggest knock on Smith was that he is slow?

(Along with the whole "dumbass talked smack and got it handed to him thing") in Pittsburgh. As in completely torched.

I don't know Martin's wonderlic, but I do know Smith had a 14 and a 16 on re-test. I guess we are not supposed to read anything into those, but call me greedy--- I prefer safeties (or any DB) that are IMPRESSIVELY smart, not SCARILY SUSPECT in the brains department.

(Whippin' out the heavy artillery, here) Can anyone say (drumroll, please)

Ahmad Carroll?

As always, all I know is what is out there. I liked Smith in the pre-season, but then again, I liked our o-line too. I'm just sayin'.

So if Martin can fill one of the roles, and we have Rouse manning the other.. with Bush filling in reserve... why are we working out safeties then?

Collins will be back at some point.. if they are speaking truth on the injury report and so will Bigby.. so I ask again.. why are we looking to add another safety if we have three that can play.. according to the Packers that is.

My opinion, they gaffed on thinking Bush could reliably fill in for any length of time and since they in essence cut Smith to keep the Bush and Martin.. they are trying to amend that error. (For Zero.. cut Bush and keep Smith.. because two posts later that doesn't seem to be clear lol.)

Regardless.. I think the urgent fill is to stabilize the offensive line.. if that doesn't get corrected it will make the safety issue look rather tiny.
