By this time of the season teams have plenty of history to work off of in preparing for their next opponent. It was obvious that the Cowboys were going to exploit our pass protection problems and play extremely tight down low essentially saying "go over the top if you can."

People here have been crying "throw it short"...well, we threw it short against the Boys over and over and you know what? It was HARD sustaining drives.

In short teams are going to rush four and stick to the receivers like glue feeling pretty good Rodgers will be on his back before he can get the ball to anyone open deep.

Looking ahead we play several teams at the top of the NFL in rush defense with the Steelers #1, the 49'rs #3, Baltimore #5, and Arizona #8. On the other hand both the Steelers and Baltimore have been burned by the big play downfield and Detroit, Arizona, and the 49'rs are at the bottom of the league in pass defense.

If we stay conservative and try throwing short most of the time it plays right into the hands of a good rush defense because they will stay up close to the receivers and be in position to help out on the run.

So here it is. We need Tauscher and Finley back and get back to being an offense that will destroy you with mid range passes and an occassional long ball. We beat the Cowboys because our defense was unbelievable and allowed the offense to just keep grinding away.

If we knew the D could be THAT GOOD for seven weeks we could possibly try and just dink-a-do the ball down the field but IMO we have to get this offense doing what it does best if were going to do anything like win five of the last seven games.

Teams have our number in terms of what to do against us. It's up to our 0line to call customer service and get a new number.

Until the offensive line gets figured out we are going to need to force the short quick passing game regardless of if we are a better offense throwing mid to long range passes because we won't have Rodgers by the end of the year.

The short game is good. It works better when the QB and WR on the same page to exploit the defense playing up tight.

I'm not sure I follow this original post as normally I do with warhawk. This one seems like a stretch to make a point and I think I failed to grasp the point.

The rankings of the defenses is relatively meaningless against us.

Our offensive linemen miss assignments on the shitty defenses just as good as they miss assignments on the good defenses.

It is not a matter of being out-played by the great "D's" in this league. We can hold our own against the complete tomato cans in the NFL on that side of the line of scrimmage, no one else.

We might play AS GOOD, or BETTER, against some of the most highly respected defenses, because even our STUBBORN coaches recognize that they need to alter their game plan, or specifically game plan for those defenses.

How is that for some whack-logic?

Did you notice: this was the second game all season (first against a good team) where our O-line didn't give up a single sack. Rodgers was credited with being responsible for 2, and then Lee was responsible for giving up the other 2.

It should also be interesting to note, with regards to the inabillity to sustain drives, that Bob McGinn credited the receivers with one of their more sub-par performances this week by not being able to gain seperation and win 1-1 match-ups again corners. McGinn noticed a subtle adjustment in the coverage the CBs were playing in the first Q, and he thinks that took the Packers receivers by surprise.

Regardless, I have to wonder how long MM/A-Rod stick to a more conservative approach.

Edit - McGinn says that the excessive blitzing by Dallas forced the corners into underneath man coverage, a departure from what they originally play and the Packers receivers just didn't adjust well.

I agree with you, warhawk. The short passing game is not necessarily the key to success for this offense. I do think it has been underutilized at times, but often the receivers have had trouble getting free on those short routes and the pass protection has been so godawful that Rodgers has not had throwing lanes and at times has even been sacked. (It was entirely typical of our offense that last week that there was one play where DeMarcus Ware--DeMarcus Ware!--was completely unblocked on the blind side and sacked Rodgers in about two seconds.)

I think the key to success is less about scheme and more about winning matchups and making plays. With every game, I become more and more concerned that, for whatever reason, Greg Jennings is not the same player he used to be. We need Finley back to take up some of the slack. I'm not sure if Tauscher will make that big a difference, now that the coaches have finally put Lang at RT, where he should've been all along. But I agree that we need a fair number of midrange throws and deep throws to gain yardage in big chunks and loosen up opposing defenses.

One final note: I have to admit that as much as I like Rodgers and as much as I'm sick of Favre, this season has made me appreciate Favre's mastery of the slant pass. He has such uncanny timing and accuracy that those slants always have the potential to become big plays--or at least they did when he was in Green Bay. I think he throws the slant pass better than anyone in history, and we had come to take it for granted because he played here for so long.
