especially with a highly accurate kicker.

Yep. Longwell had been 8-8 from 50+ over the last 2 years.

He was 100% over the last two years 50 yards or more. 2 for 2 last season and the one prior, 6 for 6.

Unless I'm reading your comment wrong, because it looks like he was 50%.

Oh man this was so great! I'm watching the game upstairs with my fiancee, and my roommate is watching it in the basement. Since we have HD upstairs, it comes in about two seconds earlier in the basement. My roommate, and diehard Vikings fan, starts screaming at the top of his lungs just as Favre is pulling the ball up on my TV upstairs. Be feeling I could have possibly asked for, short of the Packers playing in that game!

Watching that play at 4:30 a.m. (or whenever it was) on a tiny laptop screen in Germany was one of the most gratifying moments of my life.

Toward the end of the video, Sabol says, "This is the fine Favre has walked throughout his Hall of Fame career between brilliance and catastrophe. More often than than not, he has been brilliant, but every once in a while, this is what you get when you try to make random, improvisational plays that are outside the framework of the offense."

I'm not convinced of the truth of that statement. I would love to see a statistical analysis of how often Favre's "random, improvisational plays" have "been brilliant." At least in the playoffs, I suspect they've gone awry almost as often as not, perhaps even more often than not.

I grin every time I hear, "We're GIVING AWAY the NFC Title Game!"

It's so cool to finally hear an announcer call Favre on his shit -- during the game, no less.

I was thinking the same thing NSD, if he had been brilliant more often than not I think he'd have more than 1 ring

Well one that comes to mind, that play at the end of the half against Seattle, snow game, up by 4 or whatever, where he was falling and flung the pass, thats improvisation stretched the lead from 4 to 11. Or even something like that throw to Sharpe against the Lions WC game. From what I remember, it was a pretty awkward and risky throw to throw to the corner while running away from the play. Or even that TD against hte Cowboys where he pumps, gets defender in air, then runs under him and throws a strike to Rice - thats not designed that way but to see someone do that at 40 is pretty cool. Or stuff like this:

And thats why Favre is fun to watch. He made some really bad plays from improvising but there is A LOT of brillance too, I think thats hard to deny. He's not afraid to try to make something happen and be the goat.

I've seen lots of stupid decisions/INTs off bad reads or whatever but in terms of running around and making something happen, I feel like he's done a lot of good. For example, that INT to Driver in 2007 against the Giants is not from improvising a play, it wasn't even a bad decision, just a HORRIBLE throw - REALLY bad throw actually, lol.

I posted this as a joke:

But actually that is AWESOME. Very smart Kolb. Knowing its 4th and 15 and no play, he purposely threw it to that guy to pin them deep. It was like a punt. Now, THAT'S improvisation, lol!

In the playoff game against the Rams, though, he tried at least two of those shovel passes, and he was lucky as hell neither one was intercepted. If your leader is going to gamble on risky plays, he better be prepared to take the blame when they blow up, and Favre was rarely willing to do that.

"Just trying to make a play" . . . blah. Take a sack or throw it away, and go for it on the next down.

I love the angry, despairing announcer calls. It makes me fuzzy knowing that this shitty little franchise is so used to losing when it counts.
