A view from the Vikings side....

by Adam Warwas

1. Minnesota Vikings (2009 Record: 12-4)

For the most part the Vikings have been dormant throughout free agency. Brett Favres retirement decision is often thought to be the key to the Vikings success in 2010, and remains a relative unknown.

If Favre returns, then the Vikings will bring back every one of their starting players from the end of 2010. The only exceptions to this seem to be linked directly to the rehab of cornerback Cedric Griffin and middle linebacker E.J. Henderson.

The Vikings lost two key backups on offense in Artis Hicks and Chester Taylor. The plans to replace these two are not 100% clear yet, but the draft may provide answers to these questions.

The Vikings signed kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd, which should help solidify a special teams coverage unit that has been known as the occasional liability throughout the last two seasons.

The Vikings only other free agent signing is Mike Montgomery, who is expected to be the primary backup at left defensive end. He does, however, have the abilities to play at every spot along the defensive line if need be.

Other than Favres pending decision, the only thing that really seems to present a decrease in total wins in 2010 is what appears to be a very tough schedule.

2. Chicago Bears (2009 Record: 7-9)

For quite a stretch in 2009, the Bears appeared to be the Vikings biggest threat in the Division. After a mid-season implosion, however, the Bears were just another mediocre football team.

Mike Martzs offense has its flaws, but the high flying spectacle that he puts out there on Sundays is usually capable of winning two or three games a season even without any talent. The Bears have some talent, however.

The Bears were this years big spenders in free agency where they were able to reel in Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor, filling needs that needed to be addressed.

Unfortunately for them, the draft will be of little help since they do not have their first selection until the third round.

With Jay Cutler entering his second season in Chicago, it is fair to expect some improvement out of him, especially if the Bears remain committed to improving the talent around him.

3. Green Bay Packers (2009 Record: 11-5)

Like the Vikings, the Packers were a good team and have managed to retain most of their lineup featured in 2009. Unfortunately for them, that may not be such a good thing.

They retained Mark Tauscher at age 33 and Chad Clifton at age 34. Plus they have aging cornerbacks. I feel like this team is just one injury to a key member away from being terrible, especially after seeing their O-Line crumble in the absence of Clifton and Tauscher last season.

The Packers have a promising draft ahead of them, but it may not be enough help to keep up with father time who is catching up with much of their team.

Lastly, if the Packers think they can continue to depend on Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson to establish a run game, then they are going to continue to have a one-dimensional and predictable offense especially in the latter half of the year.

4. Detroit Lions (2009 Record: 2-14)

The Lions may have a way to go before anyone takes them seriously, but I am really starting to suspect that Jim Schwartz knows how to build a good football team out of nothing.

Following a good draft in 2009, the Lions have added some talent to their roster via free agency. Sure they paid too much for him, but Nate Burleson is talented enough to take some pressure off of Calvin Johnson. Kyle Vanden Bosch will instantly improve what was once the worst defensive line in the NFL.

With the depth of talent in this draft class, the Lions could very well add another three of four starters to their team witht heir #2 position.

This team is on the rise (not that they couldve fallen any farther) and may surprise a few teams in 2010.

I'm a little surprised that the Bears are nr. 2 on that list, instead of the Packers. The Vikings are the clear favorites to me if Favre comes back, but I really think that the Packers should be nr. 2.

It's like the writer is loving all the moves the Bears made, while totally ignoring that they don't have an O-line, have a way worse secondary than the Packers, don't have any receivers, and have Martz who has gotten all of his QBs killed.

Then he goes on and says that the Packers have a bad O-line and secondary and are one injury away from being a horrible team.

I'd love to hear where, because we where a pretty decent team with a banged up O-line and missing 3 of our top 5 corners in Harris, Blackmon and Lee.

Lastly, if the Packers think they can continue to depend on Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson to establish a run game, then they are going to continue to have a one-dimensional and predictable offense especially in the latter half of the year.

Ryan Grant was pretty solid last year. Good yardage, good average, one fumble on the year. Jackson has been an amazing blocker throughout his career and has shown nothing but improvement as our 3rd down back.

I agree, getting another guy would be great, a real speedster, but we're the first team in NFL history to have a 4000 yard passer, 2 1000 yard receivers and a 1200 yard rusher two years in a row. That should account for something, right?

This surprises me little.. especially from Viking prespective.

He talks about father time and ignores that fact with Pat Williams, Brett Favre, Steve Hutchinson, and Mt McKinney... fails to mention AP's problems and no where to turn if they creep up again.

Downgrades Grant... but fails to acknowledge that he churned out similar numbers to AP behind a tattered line.. father time is catching up with us huh... we are what 4 years in a row the youngest team in the league.. we have a trouble spot and that is OT..

Chicago is going to get a fair share of picks to make the playoffs this season.. but I am very confident with Martz leading the offense, Cutler behind center and Peppers dogging it on the defense this team will implode early and just play out the season from there.

The lions might just pass the Bears by this season.. I like the direction the Lions are headed more so than the Bears.

This guy's on crack. OK, say what you will about the Vikings. That's fine. I won't argue that. But da Bears? Come on. They have a D that is on the decline. It was mediocre last year. Their O isn't that good either. They will need to build more of a team around Cutler, and it will take a miracle for Martz to have a top 10 O. In other words, bet against it happening.

Our O was #3 and our D was #7. No, not an elite D. Yet. But our D is on the rise, unlike da Bears.

This is just stupid. If anyone is one injury away from being a terrible team, it's da Bears, not us.

And why downplay Grant? Grant last year was #8 in fantasy points. Plus, he doesn't fumble. When Grant hits the ground, the ball is still in his hands. This is HUGE, especially in Playoff time. I think the Seattle game in '07 was a fluke. That Ryan Grant is no more. Grant rushing for 11 TDs and 1200+ yards behind our line is quite impressive.

Back to da Bears, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Lions finished '10 with a better record than da Bears. Seriously, I wouldn't.

This guy is confusing. How could Chicago be at #2 when Green Bay's weaknesses (o-line and secondary) are still stronger than Chicago. Not to mention talking about how Grant and Jackson are a problem when Chicago is sporting 2 3rd down backs with Forte and Taylor. I also think that it's quite a stretch to say Chicago had "quite a stretch" where they were Minnesota's biggest threat when they only had a 3-4 week span the whole year that they even had a winning record.

I see his point with the Packers being one injury away from sucking, if Woodson goes down we are in deep deep shit. We have no help at cb with Harris in doubt and Bigby being hurt all the time. You don't think teams have learned how to beat us hell i could call an offense and beat us. Spread the field and the Packers are in trouble plain and simple.

I just don't see the Bears being that good, I think the Vikes will be and should be the favorites in the division they have the better defense and can match our passing game. I think AP was a fluke last year with a new style of offense and he will be back strong this year.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I agree that was one messed up report on the pack - it sounded like he was talking about the bears or lions and not the pack ...

back to your lions statement - I really like the moves the lions have done this year and can see them getting Alot better with their picks. Assuming they go with suh they are going to have a nice D this year.
I be betting on them more this year ;)

Bears really havnt done crap to help cutler out - if this is their franchise QB that they wanted for so long they didnt do much to help secure his health and some peeps to throw too. Ok taylor was a nice pickup Ill give em that (liked his plays in MN) but ... they dont have much for draft picks ...

and I agree pack - vikes - lions -bears ...

This guy is a weanie.

The Bears? Give me a break. They are a desperate team making desperate moves. They are and will be non existint in the draft and they have a lot of guys getting older than many of our guys. Harris and Urlacher are on their last days and they won't hurt for losing Vasher because they don't have any CB's anyhow. Let alone DB's behind them.

They went out pretty big last year in FA getting Cutler and help on the Oline and all it did was cost them about three years of high draft picks and they still sucked.

FACT: We've been the youngest team in the league for like three years in a row and now father time is catching up to us? Geez, that was quick.

FACT: '09 was our FIRST year in the 3-4 and when we started winning all those games Kampman and Harris were not playing. So if that's all we lose(and Harris is only a maybe) how are they not going to be better?

This guy strikes me as the type of guy that gets all hyped over big FA signings and does no homework on what teams have on their roster prepared to make a step forward.

That probably would take too much effort.

Bears and Lions should be No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Any list without that, is blinded by something. Either loyalty or disgust.

If Favre is back, Minnesota remains No. 1. If Favre isn't back, Green Bay is No. 1.

I think it's that simple in terms of the pre-season discussion. Of course anything is possible.

GB was also a top 15 team in rushing last year.
