(CNN) -- To anyone who uses Twitter, the word "tweet" is as natural as, well, a bird. But don't expect to see it in The New York Times.

"Someday, 'tweet' may be as common as 'e-mail,' " wrote Phil Corbett, the Times' standards editor, in a memo this week, according to The Awl. But, for now, Corbett has nixed further use of the word -- "outside of ornithological contexts," he wrote.

The Times will stop using the word because "tweet" isn't standard English, "and standard English is what we should use in news articles," Corbett said.

Corbett noted that not everyone uses the micro-blogging site and therefore may not be familiar with what a "tweet" is.

After all, The New York Times always uses words people are familiar with, like "louche" and "shibboleths."

So what will The New York Times be calling these Twitter updates now?

" 'Tweet' may be acceptable occasionally for special effect," Corbett said in the memo.

"But let's look for deft, English alternatives: use Twitter, post to or on Twitter, write on Twitter, a Twitter message, a Twitter update. Or, once you've established that Twitter is the medium, simply use 'say' or 'write.' "

It's not the Times' fault that people aren't familiar with words like "louche" and "shibboleth" -- they are time-honored words with long-established meanings. By contrast, "tweet" is slang, the product of a short-term fad that may or may not (hopefully not) have any true longevity. Myspace used to be all the rage, and who even logs in anymore? (Ah, yes, the highschooler I met at a Reclaiming our Heritage military fair the other day did ask me if I have Myspace).

I applaud Mr. Corbett for this decision. I wish that I could be confident that this decision represents a stand against the twitterization of news on the part of the Times, but on that score I cannot be so sanguine. It's just so much cheaper and more convenient to follow a bunch of Twitter feeds than maintain a stable of investigative journalists.

I understand his point and do not disagree with his reasoning but even I know what a "tweet" is and I have no account and never follow anyone's links back to them.

I don't think the fact that some people might not know what the word means is the underlying reason for this editorial decision. I think it simply stems from the fact that the word "tweet" in this context is slang, and this newspaper is written in standard English, which "tweet" most certainly is not. The Times doesn't use slang in its writing, so why would it make an exception here?
