I explained my thought process in a different thread. Mike McCarthy drafted Alex Smith, who played a spread offense in college, over Aaron Rodgers, who played -- and excelled in -- a pro-style offense in college. Rodgers' strengths are clearly in the pro-style offense, under center, yet McCarthy stubbornly has him in the shotgun on the majority of his plays. Why? Why does McCarthy persist in imposing a spread-style system on this offense instead of exploiting the assets we have that are geared for a West-Coast Offense? I'm not saying he's malicious, but a cynic could wonder. Maybe malice is giving him too much credit. Maybe he's just blind.

I just think that he wants this offense to be ran his way. And no other way than that. That's obviously someting he could do with Alex Smith.

I think that he has already put Rodgers under center quite a bit more than he imagined doing with Smith when he drafted him. It's just that this is his way, I think, of creating some space for the QB. Getting him some time and let him have an easier time to scan the field. Coupled with our 'athletic' O-linemen, who should be able to kickslide back a little better than stopping the bullrush.

I don't know if anything what I said is true, of course, but it sounds valid enough to me.

Favre was reported to love the shotgun wasn't he? McCarthy had him in it a lot in '07. McCarthy is also reported to have been behind the change from Favre to Rodgers. Why would McCarthy want a switch to a "prostyle" player from Favre who was a big fan of the shotgun?
