Officials: Afghan avalanche kills 15, strands 100s

KABUL (AP) -- Avalanches in a mountain pass north of Kabul have killed at least 15 people, injured more than 50 and left hundreds stranded on blocked roads, Afghan officials said Tuesday.

The avalanches took place Monday following heavy snows in the Salang Pass that links the Afghan capital with the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif and rescuers worked through the night to save more than 200 people, said Gen. Abdul Rahman Sayedkhail, Parwan provincial police chief. He said 54 people were injured.

""It's very heavy snow. We're cleaning the roads. So far, we have found 15 bodies, including women and children, he said.

""There's still danger from avalanches there so that's why our work is a little slow,"" Rahman said.

About 100 Afghan soldiers were mobilized to join police and others in the rescue efforts, along with four helicopters, several ambulances and several bulldozers, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said.

""Unfortunately there were more avalanches this morning which made our work a little difficult, but we are trying to rescue people,"" he said.

Military helicopters were dropping food packages to people stuck on snow-blocked roads, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemerai Bashary said.

LOL! We got hit pretty hard. So we just stayed indoors for one day, while the landlord cleared the snow.
Heck....I've seen worse storms in my lifetime.
Your lucky you have a plow Dfoster! That has to come in handy! There have been SO many times where we were stuck where we live, because the parking lot we have takes forever to be plowed out. The town leaves it for last during a heavy storm.

Well we have the national guard out here Dave, and up at work we are pretty close to 58 inches since Friday. They have the roads closed off to get up there so it kinda sucks with no work.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I have another truck. It's an f-150 4wd.

It is parked along the side street, along with my car. (I have a corner lot) I dug my car out this morning and created a "lane" for it. When I contemplate the "blade work" I did last night in order to be able to dig out my car..."backdragging" etc.--I also (last night) created a lane for my next door neighbor (side street) to park his cars along the street.

So, both forwards and backwards, (and alongside, for that matter) I have shoved snow towards this truck.

Now I'm worried that the municipality is going to tell me I have to move that truck....If they can tell that there is a truck there, that is. Right now all it looks like is that I just decided to pile snow there.

I agree about the Ford.

Fords piss me off...

I will say this for it, though-

It gets much better gas mileage, and is not nearly as "stiff" to drive.

I think that has a lot more to do with it being a half-ton vs. a 3/4 ton.

I used to have a Chevy K-10 1/2 ton with a plow, an old one, with an old "cable" western blade. It couldn't move snow like this Dodge, and was always breaking on me, but you can really get into a "zone" plowing with that cable style control, plus the relative ?loosesness? of a Chevy 1/2 ton... My wife would never believe that I am saying this (Example-My mechanic and I debated on whether to put out an engine fire when I pulled into his lot--- on fire----really--that was a fun re-wire job, lol)

I miss that truck.

The black dodge we have is also stiff.. it is just a 1/2 ton.. but it also is very tight in the steering which makes it fun to drive as well.

I will drive the wheels off my older chevy's.. the motors might burn a little oil.. or drip a little.. but they are just plain comfortable to drive and have little to no maintenance about them.. I have owned one Ford.. and it was a pain in the ass to keep up with.. not to mention no matter what you seemed to do with the power steering pump.. you got that same irritating whine from it.. that truck pissed me off.. I actually didn't mind that the ex wife rolled it.. lol.
