I'm thinking we ran the 3-4 defense in 95 and 96 i'll do some searching but I believe we did

I'm pretty sure that we ran a 4-man line with Sean Jones - Santana Dotson - Gilbert Brown - Reggie White.

I remembered them running it, here is Leroy Butler talking about it

Its not really that big of a deal and Ill tell you why, he said. In 1995, 1996 and 1997, we switched to a 3-4 defense in one week. Shut down San Francisco. Then, we went back to a 4-3. Then we played the Dallas Cowboys and switched to a 3-4 defense.

Its not complicated. You put more athletes out there. Youre taking out bigger guys. You take out the big lineman and you add a linebacker to get to the quarterback.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Ah, nice. Thanks for that. They played some kind of hybrid for a small period off time, it seems. I didn't know that. I can't imagine it being more than a few games and snaps, though, as nearly everything I've seen is in the 4-3.

I do like the Mays pick and the comparison to Troy, if anyone has watched Troy he is not a very good man to man coverage guy, he is used more for blitzing and zone covering.

"dhazer" wrote:

:cyclopsani: Troy can cover man to man... is he the best? No but he's above average at it... Mays is ways below average at it... but comparison... other than they hit hard, play safety at USC... that's about where it ends...

Daddy Ted passed on Crabtree and picked a part-timer in Raji

Mays is stiff in space too. You isolate him one and one and he's not reliable in making the tackle. He has the measurables to be a first-round pick, but in this deep of a draft, I think he falls to the 2nd round.

In this scenario, Mike Iupati and Sergio Kindle would probably play more of a role than Mays especially Kindle. I don't see how he lasts that long, but if he does, GB should be his stopping point.

Mays will be used like one of the Packer legends when we ran the 3-4 and that was Butler. But time will tell but I would enjoy that pick even though I wish Dez would slip to us and we draft him just to see Dfoster go crazy like i did last year when Daddy Ted passed on Crabtree and picked a part-timer in Raji

Holy crap, we agree. I'm sold on Mays as well (as sold as I can be about a draft pick, at least). I'm not sure there'll be a better OT there than he has the potential to be at safety, especially with Collins out there with him.

If a real LT prospect falls to 23, or if they decide it's worth it to move up to get one, I'd be okay with that. But if it's Mays or some LT reaches, I'd have to go with Mays, personally.

I am not going to pick holes in this because this is a tough draft to predict.

I think it is fortunate that it looks like the draft is fairly deep where we need some help. Safety, CB, OT, and 3-4 LB's are plentiful this year.

I would say that not securing a pass rushing player of some nature is maybe not accurate. I would put somebody in the first three rounds that shows ability to attack and with Kampman gone Jones definately needs competition.

Names I would not mind hearing come up would be Safford, Washington, McCluster and a few others.

I think this Washington kid is a sleeper. First round talent with some prior issues that will drop him on draft day. McCluster fills two positions we could use some help in and I know I've heard Ted Thompson is interested.

If it's not Mays my guess it will be a Kindle or Hughes and a Safety around round 3. That's all a guess like everybody elses but I can't see Ted Thompson not going after somebody that can get to the QB fairly early on.

So you're saying that Crabtree would have started over Driver and Jennings right away?

I don't believe so. He would have been a part timer as well, and we needed a DT more than a WR. A LOT more.

No, dhazer just likes to whine about everything Ted does, even when it turns out good in our favor. It's just who he is. Packers could go 19 - 0, shutting out every team with no turn overs and he'd say that Ted built a cocky arrogant team of talentless LUCKY bums.

Crabtree would have been battling Jones and Nelson for time. And would have lost if he missed those five games as a Packer. The 49ers are WR short, the Packers not so much, so the need to throw him to the wolves wouldn't have persisted as it did with the 49ers.
