Rockmolder.....my Dad kept a log or something like that and after the war he wrote down several of the more "humanistic" stories of what he went through. I think that particular event was somewhat used in an old TV series about a German officer and American (can't remember the name of the show). My Dad gave his writings to a friend in the Army who later went on into the publishing field, so some of his stories could very well have been used in TV or movies. I may have told that story here a long time ago.

That could very well be. It just sounds so familiar. It's a great story, I know that much.

Another +1 to Bob. Amazing story.

I agree with Kevin. 'Twas stupid. But there's an old saying in history. You get really good at fighting the previous war.

It's real easy for a historian to tell you all the mistakes you made after the war ended. Sounded like a good idea at the time.

Hitler only feared one man - General Patton (who is one of the greatest Americans ever and one of my personal heroes). So Hitler had his men defending Germany from Patton as Bob explained.

But yes, they were sitting ducks. A little trick in war - shooting down is a lot easier than shooting up. Ask the French about that. Also ask the Swiss. That's one reason the Swiss were never conquered (the main reason though is their attitude).

My grandfather was on one of the ships that was heading to Japan when Japan surrendered. They were on the water, almost there when they surrendered. Blows my mind to think about it sometimes.

Zombie...that little trick you referred to is used in hunting today. It's a lot easier to shoot down than up. Plus, going uphill is a hell of a lot harder than going down, except on the knees. In any warfare....get the high ground first and defend it to the utmost. Same in camping. Find the high ground to put your tent up. If it rains, you'll be ok, while the idiots below you better know how to swim.

Which is why in Western Montana and Northern Idaho ain't nobody gonna take us, 'cause we got the high ground. (LOL)

Zero,

It was the best way it could be done at that time. I know it looks crazy.

However, one can Thank The Canadians for the fact there were less casualties at Normandie. You see... There was a little known practice run at an invasion of Europe across the English Channel.

This practice run was designed to see what they would need to learn and do better in the Normandie invasion. It was called "The Battle Of Dieppe." It cost the Canadians boys big time.. But it is what they learned in this slaughter practice run that saved not only Canadian Lives at Normandie, but American and British lives in what looks like "Cluster-Fuck" at Normandie..

Forgotten casualties from the battle of Normandie include the 3,367 Canadians who did the practice run.

For God And Country... The Canadians were a huge part of the defeat of Hitler.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
