Well, if that's true, we made a solid play for him and offered a very reasonable pick.

2nd round was just too high.

Kudos for the effort.

Wish we would have gone after a DL or two.

Maybe a OG, too.

I agree with this thought. Kind of like what happened when we drafted Aaron Rodgers. OMG WHY DRAFT A QB WE NEED DEFENSE!! When some didn't understand the importance of a QB and the potential talent that fell into our lap. I admit it, yes, I didn't get excited over the pick. I liked Rodgers from the few clips I saw, but I couldn't help think a defensive player would have been better a selection.



reading what Gonzo has said, Peterson told him that a 3rd would get the deal done. Now Ted offered a 3rd and Peterson refused it and requested a 2nd. We have to remember that Thompson has a job to do beyond this trade. If he gets the reputation that he's soft in negotiations, that'll follow him and we'd continue to get fleeced. I would've loved Gonzalez on our team, but not at the expense of our GM getting jerked around. If what Gonzo said is true, I'm glad Ted Thompson didn't fold.

I'm with you -- or rather I was at the time. I didn't hate the pick, but I distinctly recall thinking we needed many other things more than we needed a young "stud" QB.

I'm very happy to admit I was wrong on that one.

I don't know if we can judge that. He doesn't have much past experience with player trades. Ted was being jerked around in the Moss trade talks. He's been jerked around in the Gonzalez trade talks. He's still a relatively new GM, so I think he still has to act in a way that shows the rest of the league execs that he isn't going to dick around. He means business.

I'll be honest, I hated the pick then, and I'm not crazy about it now. This has zero to do with Rodgers' performance. He has played very well. However, we didn't need a QB, and frankly, had there not been this burning desire to get him on the field I think Favre would still be here. Picks like that and Nelson make me wonder if we wouldn't have won a Super Bowl had we drafted a few more players to fill specific needs.

I'll be honest, I hated the pick then, and I'm not crazy about it now. This has zero to do with Rodgers' performance. He has played very well. However, we didn't need a QB, and frankly, had there not been this burning desire to get him on the field I think Favre would still be here. Picks like that and Nelson make me wonder if we wouldn't have won a Super Bowl had we drafted a few more players to fill specific needs.

Also, I don't think there was a 'burning desire' to get Rodgers on the field that caused Brett to be a Jet. I'm pretty confident that it had a lot to do with Mr Favre retiring and the team having to move forward.

Per Ted and Mike and others in the staff, none of them thought Brett was going to retire and none of them wanted him to. But you can't talk a guy out of retirement because then he's playing for the wrong reasons.

I think the Chiefs just didn't want to do the deal. It's interesting that the Packers had the best offer and I do agree with a previous comment that the Packers may want to explore this deal again in the off season. Having Tony G for two years and losing a 3rd and a 6th would be worth it for me. I say this because I do believe Thompson has done a great job drafting and that there really isn't any room for more young players.

I agree that a second round pick was too much. I just wish Peterson would have agreed to a third.

The jury is still out on Finley. The only two plays I've seen of him have been penalties (the holding for the field goal against ATL and a personal foul late hit eariler this season.)

Back on topic.. a couple of points on this failed attempt..

1) A 3rd rounder for a aged skill position player is fair.. if they wanted more a late rounder maybe.

2) We are looking at one of the most frugal GM's in the NFL.. Carl Peterson.. look on long it took last year for him to pull the trigger on the Trent Green trade.. he is of the mindset that he owns a piece of gold in every aspect.

3) Honestly, I wanted to acquire TG.. it would have helped our middle passing game and made Aaron focus on utilizing his TE's, a glowing weakness in his game right now. And I can't tell if it is a TE problem or lack of attention to the position on Aaron's part.

4) It might have gave some of the fans a boost to an injury riddled season to date. A little midseason excitement might have done wonders.

5. If you haven't learned yet, Ted has a compensation calculator someplace, whether it is a formula or a feel.. but he doesn't push the envelope past a set price. The Chiefs leaked a 3rd rounder as a break point, he entered the fray with that in mind and didn't budge. He is a man of conviction, that is very clear.

6. I like the fact that Ted is doing very little talking this season to the media.. wise choice.. because he is a poor PR man. I am convinced he does a good job with player evaluations and roster makeup for the most part.. above average in the very least.. but the man cannot be the face of the front office for the media.. he just doesn't possess that skill. Doesn't make him any less of a GM though..
