Havner became a TE because he was good at it. You don't see other LB's becoming TE's. That's a very unusual position switch at the NFL level. They wouldn't have just thrown him in there unless he showed some real talent for it. And he showed a knack for getting open last year. I think he has the edge over Crabtree, who can be safely sent to the practice squad and maybe brought up next year if Donald Lee is gone.

Havner plays every phase of the game. In fact, it's his special teams play that make a difference more than anything IMO. If he didn't do that, then I could understand releasing him, but I think he does that fairly well.

Is Lee considered a receiving TE or a blocker? any insight on this player would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed.

A few years ago, he was considered to be more of a receiving TE, but now he's considered to be more of a blocking TE. Partly that's just because Finley is such a good receiver, but Lee does seem to have declined a bit as a receiver as he's improved his blocking technique.

Lee is 30 and has had declining production for the last 3 years. He also has a pretty big paycheck. The logic of keeping him because he is a good blocker is fading because of Crabtree and Havner.

Lee's drops were excessive last year.

He's had declining production for the last two years actually, not three. And that second year decline just may have had a little to do with #88 bursting onto the scene.

Pay Check doesn't matter near as much with no cap. Also Lee is much better receiver than Crabtree and blocker than Havner. I'm not sure why people think Havner is such a good block... is it because he's a former LB? ... he's decent but not overly good. Heck it's possible Havner is the worse blocker of the group. Finley can be a very physical blocker, Lee is good and only one that has shown good H-back blocking, Crabtree is the best blocker and Quarless has blocked a lot with Penn State running game and is pretty good for a rookie as well.

Yes, I meant that his peak was 3 years ago and has been declining since. I just put it together in my head wrong.

He did still drop almost 15% of his passes last year, highest among TEs with 30 or more passes. That may also have something to do with the emergence of Fin. Rodgers loss of confidence in Lee's hands.

Yeah, the drops were weird for Lee. He used to be better about that. I heard he's been catching everything thrown at him in Training Camp this year, so it might have been an aberration.
