This is a thread from the Fan Shout, an argument between me & Finley. Finley says only the Steelers have an elite D as they get takeaways, lots of sacks, and dominate Os.

I think the Vikings' D is elite. I watched all 3 games they played thus far and they completely shut down the Lions (which we had problems doing), shut off the Saints' rushing attack and made Brees look average. They limited the Dolphins to 226 total yards.

Yes, in 3 games, they only got 4 sacks but they are generating pressure. Most importantly, they're currently allowing less than 13 points a game.

Finley - I'm interested in hearing your counter argument.

I think the question isn't the number of sacks but the quality of the secondary. Coming into this season, that to me the one lingering question about the Vikings (I didn't know about Rice's injury then, or the severity of Favre's ankle problem). While I haven't seen all of the games, what I've seen suggests their secondary is substantially better than it was last year.

Assuming that continues, yes, I think they are elite.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

It can be - depends on how those back 4 pan out. The front 7 is still among the very best in the league.

One caveat: Last couple games, teams have been able to get good situational run production against them - not huge yards, but enough yards when they needed them. That's new, and interesting.

But yeah, the Vikes' D can certainly be elite. Were it not for that D they'd likely be 0-3, and a couple of those might have been blowouts.

I won't call them bad they are pretty good but not elite to me.Their secondary is questionable, their LBs are ok,and their dline is the best they got.
Lets see here for a sec in 3 games they have 4 sacks very big drop off from last year.Interceptions only 2.They haven't really played against good offenses except the Saints and they aren't playing like people thought.I count roughly 3 turnovers on the year for the viks.I don't think they are elite until they dominate by causing turnovers and pressure the QB better.

The Steelers lets see here 11 sacks,9 FF,6 INT's. They can dominate they have good pieces all over. They have a elite defense.

Finley - Let's revisit this discussion after game 8. I think by then, you'll agree with me that they're elite.

The sacks will come. I saw a lot of pressures and near misses. With sacks will come turnovers.

Finley - Turns out you were right. It comes down to the DL. They're not making sacks. Because of that, losing their starting CB gets them exploited in the passing game. They've allowed 20+ points 4 games in a row.

Well, so much for the Vikings this year.
