Each and every year, Christmas gets longer and longer. Now, it is even overshadowing Thanksgiving. Herbergers has had Christmas music playing for a few weeks now, and one of my neighbors has had a tree up in their front window since the first week of November. Before it had even snowed. In North Dakota.
What would the pilgrims and Natives say about Thanksgiving being taken over by Christmas? They would probably beat the idea in the head with a tomahawk.
I'm not a Christmas hater, or at least I try not to be (I hate Christmas music), but this is just too much. The people who decide to start Christmas decor progressively earlier every year need to respect the other holidays. It's enough that a lot of people leave up Christmas lights until April around here.

What would the pilgrims . . . say about Thanksgiving being taken over by Christmas?

I detest most Christmas stuff.

In fact, I refuse to celebrate the holiday until Christmas Eve. In my opinion, "Advent" should, if anything, be like Lent a time of self-denial not gluttony, a time of reflection rather than a time of smarmy faux-friendship. And the "celebration" should start, not end on Christmas Eve/Day.

(This by the way has pissed more than one person off, since I pretty much refuse to attend any "Christmas" parties.)

And, no I don't want to hear about how these dates were chosen to coincide with already-existing pagan celebrations. I could care less whether the birth of Christ was or was not on December 25th. The only important thing is that said birth occurred, and that the person born is my Savior. And since I have no clue -- nor, iSTM, does anyone else have much of one -- esactly when He was born, I'm going to continue setting aside that day...and the days following it up to Epiphany... as my time of celebrating His Birth.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

You know what really pisses me off Peteralan? The local drug store here started putting some Christmas stuff out before Halloween. Swear to God. That really pissed me off. They've been playing Christmas music for over a week now.

Christmas isn't a holiday any more.. it is an economic indicator and a money movement.

As much as we hate it.. the stores only feed the machine that is Christmas earlier and earlier to help their business.

Much like football is becoming less of a game and almost a pure business.

When the Packers make a move like cutting a franchise player like Harris and it is celebrated as a smart business move.. then how can we complain when strapped businesses in a rough economy rape the holiday further to improve their bottom line.

It is only smart business.

I'm really glad to see that I'm not the only one here that feels this way. The sad thing is that Corporate America (now I sound like a dick) is turning us all into Grinches by doing this annually.

I'm curious as to why you left the Natives out of that quote? 🙂

Because American Indians deride the holiday as a celebration of white hegemony over the indigenous peoples.

wow - you guys really are a bunch of grinchy butts. i was saying in shout that this is actually the first time since losing my dad that i can actually feel the Christmas spirit. it's been 5 years!

the boys are 8 now & i know this is probably the last year they'll believe in santa claus so i'm cherishing it. Christmas to me means family, happy times, & celebrating Jesus birth. i really don't care if it's not the correct date of His birth, what the stores are doing, or what's playing on the radio. it's supposed to be enjoyable.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
