Packers sign Tramon Williams to contract extension

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Tramon Williams to a four-year contract extension averaging $8.25 million, the Journal Sentinel has learned.

The deal is worth $41.25 million and extends through 2014. The Packers and agent Rodney Williams completed the deal late last week but the club didnt announce it.

Williams received a $6 million signing bonus, roster bonuses of $2.5 million in 2011, $2.8 million in 2012 and $300,000 in both 2013 and 2014.

He had been playing under a one-year tender worth $3.043 million.

Williamss base salary increased this year to $14,376,333, with $5.074 million of it guaranteed.

At $8.25 million, Williams trails just three players in Green Bay in average salary per year: quarterback Aaron Rodgers ($12.7 million), cornerback Charles Woodson ($9.73 million) and wide receiver Greg Jennings ($8.75 million).

Williams, 27, entered the league as a free agent with Houston in 2006. Cut by the Texans, he joined the Packers practice squad in November 2006.

I like this signing a lot, Its a little higher than i was expecting, but the guy has been playing very good, and deserves #1 CB money. Pushing a good deal of money for this deal into the uncapped year, good move.

Awesome news.. locking up this kid now, paying him well bodes well for the Packers future in the defensive backfield.

Shields should continue to grow.. giving us a nice pair.

And if Lee or Underwood can elevate their game.. we don't have to worry about CB in the near future.

Moves like this give us flexibility on draft days to take the Best Player available mentality. In other words.. not reaching to fill positions.

Great to see a guy come from being undrafted to get a big pay day. He obviously worked very hard and earned it.

Good news, and it sends a good message to the rest of the team. Perform at a high level and you will be rewarded.

Tramon deserves to be the fourth highest paid, behind only Rodgers, Woodson, and Jennings, considering that Matthews and Finley are still playing out their rookie contracts, so this deal sounds about right.
