For me....

You can only love, if they love you back.

It is like I am living in the hills outside of Salt Lake City Utah in a cast off Mormon group that still believes in having more than one wife. I love them both equally.

Number One wife is the RAIDERS. Fact is I love her, but she has not loved me back for 8 years. She is trying her best to love me back this year though.

Number Two wife is the Packers...... at least she loves me back.

If you give love, you should get some love back.

Right now I sleep with Wife Number Two 5 nights a week, and make the obligated journey into Wife Number One's bed twice a week.

However... We all have SIX children (Super Bowls) together. Three from Wife Number One, and three from Wife Number Two.

The kids are doing well. It is madness!

"There is always some madness in love. But there is always some love in madness."

The Raiders are my second favorite team. I love the Packers because I grew up like a mile from Lambeau. When I was 10 I turned on the old black and white tv in my room, which was falling apart due to old duct tape, and BAM! Chester Marcol gets a FG blocked in overtime, runs it in and wins the game! So of course I was hooked.
But I like the Raiders, because I like their attitude. Packers fans are excruciating with their family values bullshit. Raiders fans aren't afraid to be the bad guy. I respect that.

Ha, yeah living in enemy territory definitely increases the hardcore fandom. Peter and I are from North Dakota (Vikings territory for sure), and I went to college in Moorhead MN, and just graduated this spring from Luther Seminary, which is in St. Paul. It's been a wild ride. It makes it fun though.

I grew up in southeastern South Dakota -- Viking country for sure. My dad, a Minneapolis native, remains a Viking fan. When I was a youngster I skipped around from favorite team to favorite team -- the Dolphins, 49ers, the Steelers to an extent.

In 4th grade I settled on the Packers. I had a few friends that were Packer fans and I paid a lot of attention to mainstream coverage of football. Brett Favre played a sizable role in my fandom.

When they won the Super Bowl the next year, it just sort of stuck. I have no backup teams these days. Only one team can make me jump for joy or turn my stomach -- the Pack. As time has gone by I've become an increasingly hardcore fan.

As to why -- I was an impressionable 9 year old and longevity has played its part. I also lived in Minneapolis for the better part of four years during college. Living in the enemies' nest, at least in my experience, strengthened my Green Bay bonds.

Living in ND, I know exactly what you mean about all the Vikings fans, and I agree that living among them and being the only Packers fan makes me even more proud. I have a few friends that claim they are Packers fans, but then on Mondays every once in awhile they will ask who we played and if we won, so I pretty much consider myself the only Packers fan, which I am completely okay with.
You and I were hooked at a similar age. I started liking them in 6th grade, so it was 2 years after the SB (bozz was a year off).
Brett Favre played a major role for me as well in solidifying my fandom, and I think that's why it hurt so bad when he kept waffling and inevitably left. I'm proud to say however that I never put it on the Packers, that I put it on him. His head was too big, and it was time that he left Green Bay.

Funny little side note: the day that the Vikings signed Brett Favre was the day after my nephew, bozz's child, was born. We were listening to ESPN in his wife's room when we heard it lol. It was all we could do to not scream the F word.

Except for last year when they were in our effing faces because Brett Favre annihilated us. We got our revenge this year though, the last year Favre will ever play. Probably. Maybe.

Haha. Classic. Yeah the summer of 2008 Summer of Favre was such a rollercoaster. Green Bay coming off their best season in years -- and one where Favre played brilliantly for most of it. An overtime away from a Super Bowl. Then an appropriate retirement. Shit, I missed class for two straight days and sat around watching clips of Favre's best moments over the years. He was my sports idol -- and for the haters on here, you have to put it in context. Favre was the single biggest reason I became and remained a Packer fan.

Then the waffling, and the rumors and the controversy. ESPN became the Favre Channel. The Greta Van Sustern interview; the three-hour meeting with McCarthy wherein the train left the station. Phew. It was exhausting. Finally Green Bay took the field for its first preseason game -- yes I said PRESEASON -- and Rodgers looked legit. I've never been that pumped for an exhibition. Even though Green Bay won only six games, I just had this feeling that the team would be in good hands.

Point is: the Favre situation was taxing, but most of us came out at the end as even bigger fans of Green Bay. I have Favre to thank for a getting the ball rolling, but guys like Woodson, Driver, Jennings, Matthews and of course Rodgers have kept it rolling.

When I was a kid we had some relatives from the States for a visit, and they gave me a Brett Favre trading card. Years later, when I was starting to discover what an awesome game american football is, I saw Favre was still playing and was like "AWESOME! I'm gonna root for the Packers".
