Suspended Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly has begun the process of applying for reinstatement, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette on Friday.

Brian Overstreet, Jolly's agent, told the newspaper that he was optimistic that his client will be reinstated.

Jolly was suspended indefinitely without pay in July for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Blog Blitz: Packers

Jolly is facing drug charges in Houston following his July 2008 arrest outside a club for possession of at least 200 grams of codeine. If convicted, Jolly faces up to 20 years in prison.

Jolly is still under contract with the Packers, and he hopes to play for them next season. A team source told The Green Bay Gazette that the Packers would be willing to give Jolly a second chance if he's clean.

"Theyve been very supportive of him this whole ride," Overstreet said. "So Id be surprised if that didnt happen. But you know, Johnny realizes that he has some responsibilities in this and to make sure that he does that. But theyve been nothing but supportive of Johnny his entire career, even with this."

Overstreet was unsure how long the reinstatement process might take.

Now I know some of you puritanical-types out there might not agree with me--but I want Jolly back, STAT! I dunno...what do you think? Missing out on a Super Bowl ring because you were too busy acting like a jackass enough of a lesson learned? Enough of a punishment? If the league forgives Vick & Rapelingsberger I think we can get over a few dumb drug charges and get on with life. This guy was a beast and a play-maker. We cannot have enough!!!

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

While he's an idiot, yeah, he should get back on the field. He wasn't the most productive lineman, but he had a knack for getting his hands up and batting balls down.

He, along with Cullen Jenkins, in my opinion made that Packers run D that good in 2009.

Wait I thought he had agreed to a plea deal with a lot of probation type stuff but no jail time. Here. I found an article  that goes back to August 3rd of 2010 about it:

HOUSTON -- Suspended Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly made a deal with prosecutors Tuesday to avoid trial on a felony drug charge and have the case against him dismissed if he stays out of trouble for the next year.

Jolly was given pretrial diversion, a form of probation that will have the charge against him dismissed in a year if he doesn't break the law and completes other requirements, including 160 hours of community service. Part of the community service will be 10 speaking engagements where he will talk to children and others about the dangers of drug use.

The agreement was reached as Jolly's trial was set to begin this week. He had been facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Along with the community service, Jolly will undergo random drug and alcohol testing. He can't drink alcohol and is barred from bars, nightclubs or other businesses, except for restaurants, that serve alcohol. He also must notify the court when he takes prescription medication.

So what's with this part of the article?

Jolly is facing drug charges in Houston following his July 2008 arrest outside a club for possession of at least 200 grams of codeine. If convicted, Jolly faces up to 20 years in prison.

Poor journalism?

About Jolly. Yea I'd like him back as long as he's learned his lesson. Green Bay doesn't need any jackasses in that locker room.

EDIT: I guess it's because he hasn't officially passed the one year time line the case is still open. He'd be an idiot though to do anything in the next six months. I mean you avoid 20 years in jail by being a model citizen for six months. Anyone can see the logic there lol.

We got there without Jolly, we can get there again without Jolly. You're right on there, although maybe not intentionally. Is it enough of a lesson learned? If he's going to clean up his act, terminate associations with people that will get him into trouble, and make a genuine effort to reform? Absolutely. I have no intention of holding this against him indefinitely.

I guess that's the sticking point. So many celebrities that don't get the point the first time around and piss their fortune and lives away. If he makes the effort, and doesn't get angry that people are skeptical about him for a year or so, he deserves to come back and I'll be happy to have him. If not, get the hell out of town. I guess we'll see.

Adding Jolly will be like adding a decent FA. When he was on our D our run D was top 1-2 if I'm not mistaking and now we're dead last.

Under the Texas statute applicable to this case, even though there may only have been a minuscule fraction of a gram of codeine in the bottle, he was prosecuted as though the entire 200-gram container was pure codeine. It would be difficult to concoct a more irrational and unjust law if one tried.

When he was on our D it was 2009 if I'm not mistaken, and now it's 2011 and we just got done with the 2010 season. Pretending that Jolly was the only major difference between our 2009 team and our 2010 team is ridiculous. He made an impact but we lost many other starters too.
