Sherrod struggles with his pad level, especially against speed rushers, but he is an agile technician and fits the Packers philosophy of targeting more athletic OL.

Mississippi State also ran the spread offense, so Sherrod has experience pass blocking. I definitely think this means Bulaga is slated to play RT for his career.

I rated him No. 36 in my top 100. The Packers took him at No. 32, so he went off the board in the range I felt he would. I think he benefited from a weak OT class though.

I think it would probably be best to either set him up at right of left tackle, with Bulaga at the other position, and let him develop. However, Thompson says he's not committing to that, so perhaps he can cover the guard position for a season? As long as he bulks up and improves, he should allow flexibility along the offensive line.

Ted Thompson certainly seems to have a knack for picking guys in the first round who don't have to come in and start right away. I like the way Green Bay seems not to put as much pressure on its first rounders as a lot of other teams do.

I have been rooting for OL all along, and now that we have two young potential OTs on the roster, I am ecstatic. My lone critique of Thompson has always been that I didn't think our quarterback was getting enough protection, but he has certainly gone out of the way to address that issue the past couple of years.

And despite the fact that the Bears took Gabe Carimi, given the large goblet of schadenfreude from which I have been able to quaff at the Vikings' inexplicable reach for Christian Ponder, I am overall very pleased with how the draft has gone thus far.

Yeah, I agree with the flexibility thing. I'm wondering if our approach going forward will be to start the best 5, and work to adjust the players to the position. Considering, however, that we had TJ Lang along with Marshal Newhouse plugged in at Ts before, I'm wondering if this means we see Lang switch to G. I seem to recall McCarthy saying he believed G to be Lang's best position, but other coaches disagreed.

Also, I think it might be useful to separate strength from toughness: I've read that Sherrod is average when it comes to strength (he'll need to improve) but is definitely a tough player. Honestly, that alone seems to make him suited to the scheme we run.

PS - did Tom Silverstein really report correctly that Philbin said in his press conference the Packers run a "power scheme"?

I was reading something recently and - not sure who it was, Colledge maybe? - said one thing about being on the O-line was that you never wanted to be that linemen who messed up and got Brett hurt. They would have become enemy no. 1 in GB, and there was a heavy implication that possible failure made the o-linemen really maximize (even overachieve, if you will) their talents.

Rodgers, certainly, is as important to us right now as Favre was to us in his prime (if not more). I wonder if the same type of sentiment takes hold and we see our young O-linemen step up and get out of their talent more than scouts thought possible.

I still want a big honking OG. Maybe Marcus Cannon or Ijafala.

Then a late round extra OL of any kind.

Then I'll hush. 🙂

hmmm not sure what I think of this guy - my first reaction is Im not excited about him. Looks like some average joe-blow.

I suppose we need OL help and he was the next guy on the board at OL so thats whom we got ...

I like the bears pick just ahead of us better for their OL.

Id like to be proven wrong on this ... I have a feeling well have another lang here ... not that lang is bad but he didnt play much last year and isnt the best at the position.

Especially since those asstard Vikings let the Lions have Fairley. I thought the Lions card guy was going to pull a hammy running up to the Douchebag.

It's funny when you read all of these negatives from the scouts and draft experts about guys who are drafted in the first round. One scout said jokingly, "By the time we get done with these guys, none of them are any good."

I think that, as doddpower said, Sherrod sounds kind of like Clifton (who was a second round pick). I'd be just fine with another Clifton.

The guy maintained a 3.5 GPA in colledge which would indicate he has the most important attribute necessary to play OL in the NFL - intelligence.
