The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers’ decision not to have any player-organized workouts during the lockout has drawn the ire of one former player who knows something about successfully defending a Super Bowl title.

Tedy Bruschi, the former Patriots linebacker who won rings at Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX, said on ESPN today that he doesn’t understand why the Packers’ leaders haven’t stepped up and called all their teammates together for a minicamp-style get-together.

“I’m surprised that a veteran like Donald Driver, a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers, that they haven’t organized any team activities yet,” Bruschi said. “Next week is the ring ceremony. It’s perfect to say, ‘Let’s meet up a couple days early, let’s get a couple workouts in, and then let’s party at the ring ceremony.’”

Bruschi made his comments after ESPN aired comments from Driver explaining why the Packers haven’t assembled for team-wide workouts.

“Everybody’s working out individually,” Driver said. “Right now we’re just enjoying the atmosphere of winning the Super Bowl because we haven’t had the opportunity to celebrate the way we want to.”

Bruschi called into question why Driver is still talking about celebrating this year’s Super Bowl, rather than talking about trying to win next year’s.

“I’m very surprised at the leadership that they have on this team, that they’re not going to get together,” Bruschi said. “Being the Super Bowl champions, you’d think they’d want to repeat. We’re into June. It’s June now. You’ve had your little celebration the week after the Super Bowl. It’s time to move on. I think that they’re still worried about celebrating and basking in the glory of being a Super Bowl champion is a little bit worrisome if I were a Green Bay Packers fan.”

Some Packers players have gotten together for workouts, including eight offensive linemen who worked out together under the leadership of Scott Wells. But at a time when some teams have had 40 or more players together at a time, the Packers don’t think that’s necessary.

While I would like to see the Packers doing the team workout thing, as long as the players are working out I am OK.

I'm some what conflicted on this. Top level, I think yah get practicing! But has training camp time come and gone? I thought that started in late June or early July, right?

Thinking more deeply, I've heard many athletes say theres no real benefit to working out without the coaches, playbooks, schemes and what not. Even if things are the same from last year. The risk of getting injured is high or something.

I really have no definitive opinion on it, other than this.

If players are keeping themselves in shape on their own, that's great. If not, that's kind of crap because lockout or no, they should be keeping in shape.

I just looked up the training camp start date of last year, it was July 30th when players reported first. So, if we're into August and the Packers aren't doing anything to get together to practice of any kind, then I'd be inclined to put more thought into it.

Until then, I'm not too worried about it, although it would be neat to have Rodgers throwing to his WR and TE and the DB's playing. I don't think much could be done for the OL and RB and LB's without pads.

I cannot imagine there is any structure to these workouts. Without coaching, there going to lack a sufficient amount of structure to make a difference in the end. That goes for all teams and not just the Packers. Coaches coach and players play.

I personally believe there pointless.

Although I do think there is an advantage to players getting together, I also Think Teddy B. is over-emphasizing the importance and is just trying to find something to talk about that some might react to.

Originally when this topic first came up last week I also wondered where AR, and the rest of the team leaders were, but after a week of thinking about it, I guess The Packers know best. The point was made that they did play longer into the year than everyone else except The Steelers, so maybe they do deserve to relax and recuperate a little longer before starting up practice.

I agree with Zero, as long as they are keeping themselves in shape and show up ready to get down to business when the time comes, then it's all good.

I would think the biggest factor missing is the coaches chance to install their systems with the new players, and teach technique, mainly for rookies. It will hurt free agents, rookie and vet, the most when that time comes.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?
