Just did a yahoo search on the place my wife works at. Rock Tenn.
Seems that they have been buying up plants and closing them all over the country. Seems that's how they work. Buy up the competition and then close it.
17 years of blood, sweat, and tears. And this is how they pay her for it.

Companies arn't like they were back when i was young. Most of them were run by the actual owners, and you were like a part of the "family". Today, most companies are owned by some BIG company, and they don't give a damn about the workers.
When my wife started working there, it was owned by "Waldorf", and they treated the workers really well. Had Christmas parties, summertime picnics, and things like that. Then Rock Tenn bought them out, and ALL of those things stopped.
Just shows you what "big companies" do.
I hope the guys that did this get pay back.

June 3oth.
My wife goes into work, there's security at the door. They take away all company property, gate key and so on, and tell everyone the plant is closed.
So the fun has officially begun.
So much for the "mighty union" saving her job. They did NOTHING.
She's hoping that where ever she land there is no union, and people are judged individually for their own work habits.

The basis and fundamentals of a union is actually pro employee and employer.. just that today's version of the unions (most of them) really benefits the "riff raff" of the work force and little else.

Personally I didn't mind working with the union... you could use the same tactics against them that they use to protect the weak.. just takes more time and impacts morale in the process.

Good luck Alan.. wish the best for LJ as well.. btw.. the offer still stands up here.. we are actually hiring currently here. If you want to work.. you are rewarded properly. The housing costs are relatively low, it is a quiet little town with large parks, hunting and fishing close and a slower pace of life.  Just don't ask for a ton of "culture".. lol.

Boy would it be easy to turn this thread into a "condemnation of unions" thread. Other than while in college I have not worked in union shop but in that short time I experienced a lot of cr@p and heard 5 times as much.

MOVE NORD! Hang out with Pack93.

Somehow, in a majority of the places I worked, the people who were bubbly and overly friendly with everyone got better raises than those who showed up everyday and worked from the time they punched in, to the time they punched out.

I hope something good happens for you and yours.
