Listening to the post game show on sports radio 1250 last night, Gary Ellerson and Steve Sparky made reference to something to the effect that they believe Ted is not allowed to spend money in free agency.

They came to the conclusion by the interview they had with the president himself Mark Murphy.

They claim that Mark is saying that players salaries are tied to the profit of the organization, and the less they spend the bigger their profit.

Question asked: "paraphrasing"


if you spent your entire allowed salary cap last year, and had 0 $ left, would your profit margin been the same at the end of the fiscal year?



Mark said only this..

There would have been a little bit of a swing....



Then Mark went on about how they rather load up a contract in 1st year....

But listening to the interview, I did not come away with the feeling that they are looking for a bigger profit margin..

Wow... with the economy being relatively stable last year and Ted barely spending... I'd hate to think what it'd mean this year with the economy being really bad. :-?


On a serious note, I remember in the other forum, a reader (or article) linked Ted's philosophy of building through the draft to Ted's time spent as a stock broker. The conclusion ultimately was that Ted isn't one to take big gambles on other players because he has seen such thinking come back to hurt you in the market equivalent....

I'm not too familiar with the workings of stock brokers, but the post made a lot of good points...

We have some constraints in the signing bonuses, we have cash reserves to work with, and those aren't huge reserves to be dooling out handfuls of big time deals at a time.

Sure we can borrow capital, but being a publicly owned franchise, there are risks involved with that.

In other words, we can't afford to spend freely and miss often like some others can.. Boys, Skins, Raiders just to name a few..

The last thing in these times that the Packers want to do is turn to the community and ask for help.

I think that there is the Green Bay affect.. they make sure they have the coffers full enough that they don't get into trouble.. thus very cautious in the free agency market.

that its okay to draft LOT of players because even tho your going to spend money there your chances of hitting are much better, then spending it all on one or 2 players

Huge difference in how today's contract were written verses the mid 90's... the up front guaranteed money wasn't there compared to those of the last two CBA's... night and day comparisons.

But those are just silly facts instead of real concrete economic realities.

That structure along with insane money given to 1st round draft picks are major driving factors in the owners backing out on the CBA.

You're telling me that the team doesn't make money with TV contracts, stadium sales, and merchandising...?

I can hardly believe that an NFL team is a money losing venture...

I'm 50/50 on this. While I don't believe in going out and spending a boatload on one player, sometimes I think you have no choice but too. Packers are going to need something big next year and I think you have to make at the very least, 1 FA signing to help this team.
