Bush playing with confidence in camp 

A lot of people scoffed when the Tennessee Titans signed Green Bay Packers defensive back Jarrett Bush to a three-year, $4.5 million offer sheet.

Some Packers fans gagged when general manager Ted Thompson matched it.

That was two years ago when Bush was a special-teamer in a cornerback's body trying to shed a label that all he could do was run downfield as a gunner and commit a penalty. Thompson smartly hung on to Bush, and the investment paid off last year when the 27-year-old defensive back not only blossomed as a special-teamer but made a key interception in Super Bowl XLV.

Plunk yourself down on the sideline at Packers training camp this year and one of the things that strikes you right away is that the 6-foot, 200-pound Bush is playing cornerback with far more confidence and aplomb than he ever has. His one-on-one coverage has been better than it's ever been and his mistakes fewer and far between.

"Just confidence," Bush said when asked what was the difference. "Knowing who I'm up against. Knowing I can run with anybody. Just knowing formations so when the offense comes up to the line of scrimmage, I know what the tendencies are.

"Little stuff. When they motion or the tailbacks go deep it means it's a run or if the tailback is a little short it means it's a pass. I'm paying attention to detail. Everyone says you need to be a student of the game and I think that's what I'm starting to come to."

Bush has excellent role models for his studies.

If Charles Woodson is the chancellor of the College of Film Room Studies, Al Harris is the dean and Tramon Williams the senior professor. Williams' career catapulted under the tutelage of the two old vets and Bush appears to be following suit.

"He's playing with more confidence," defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. "He's never been afraid to throw his body around. That's what's made him such a good special teams player.

I think he has just started to blossum.. has all the tools to be a very good player, maybe it just took him longer to realize and leverage his skills than others.

Confidence isn't given its proper due.. when utilized properly.

Every single professional is an incredibly gifted athlete. It is amazing how quickly their skills deteriorate if they loose the confidence in themselves.

Chuck Knoblauch always comes to mind. How can an All Star second baseman lose the ability to throw the ball to first base? Some catches can't throw back to the pitcher. WR can't catch passes.

ive been on bush for awhile, but he did play well in key games down the stretch, give him a shot at earning as he goes, however if he fails he is gone !!

I feel like this article is written about him every offseason. The guy is a decent dime, and should make the team based on ST abilities alone.

I'm glad coaches are feeling good about Bush, and that he's showing more confidence and playing better. However, his Super Bowl interception, great though it was, only came as a result of blowing his assignment. I guess as far as mistakes go that was a pretty good one. Last year showed us that we need solid back-ups at every position, so I hope it's true that he's playing better.

Good to hear that he's doing well in practice, because he didn't look very good in the first preseason game.

I had never heard that he blew his assignment on the play in the Super Bowl where he got the interception. That's news to me.

Seems JB did alright considering he and Lee played every down on defense.

5 years in and some still want to make JB the whippng boy of the defense.

Working overtime: With Charles Woodson getting the night off, Tramon Williams playing only two series, and Sam Shields, Davon House and Brandian Ross all injured, the Packers asked veteran cornerbacks Jarrett Bush and Pat Lee to carry a heavy load in Cleveland, playing virtually the entire game.

Bush started in Woodson’s place and Lee was in on the first series as the nickel corner. After Williams departed, Bush and Lee were the primary corners the rest of the game, and they held up well.

“I was talking to ‘Wood’ and I said I hadn’t done that in a long time, played a whole game,” Lee said. “It felt pretty good.”

The only big play made against either one came in the first quarter, when Cleveland’s Josh Cribbs hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass over Lee, who was in good position but never turned around to find the ball.

The play bothered Lee, but at the same time it’s imperative for a cornerback to have a short memory, which Lee knows.
“Today I had one play, I didn’t look back for the ball, and it probably could have been mine if I looked back,” Lee said. “But after that I played well, had a couple of tackles. I just have to show the coaches they can trust me.”

Playing a whole game following the lockout and just two weeks of training camp was a physically demanding task, but Bush and Lee prepared themselves given the injury situation.

“We’re low on corners right now,” Lee said. “We felt ready for it. Me and ‘JB’ talked about getting ready. We had to buckle down because we were going to be out there all day.”

Yeah I would love to see the source on this as well, as I seem to remember the CB coach(Joe Whitt) saying Bush recognized the play from film study, and played it perfectly.... Sort of the opposite of a "blown assignment".
