what is missed in the recent posts is that you have to have a lead worry of playing conservatively. They DID see a 21 point lead evaporate. Nuf said. It is not all Mike's fault but the game did come down to the last play when it shouldn't have had to.

Was it McCarthy's conservatism or was it Rodgers'? We all know that Rodgers is entrusted with a vast amount of discretion in this offense and that a large proportion of the play calls comprise run/pass options. Is it then McCarthy who is turning to the run or in fact Rodgers?

I'd roll out to the weak side with one of my two TE's shadowing me and dump it off to him or the crossing WR if I could not run for it.

The issue comes down to execution. Against Minnesota the shotgun runs and power game down the stretch won the game. On 3rd and 2, the Chargers snuffed out the shotgun run. It happens. The play wasn't executed correctly, and credit needs to be given to San Diego.

Now, considering there have been blown leads in consecutive games, is it not time to put the onus on the defensive coordinator? Heck, the special teams played its part in the comeback as well -- although it's hard for me to blame either case on scheme. Woodson's return was tough because he fielded it pretty much at the .5 yard line. If he lets it bounce and it doesn't go out of the back of the endzone, San Diego could pounce on it for a TD. On the onside kick, Jordy made a nice effort and the deflection stayed in bounce. On defense, however, Capers through the kitchen sink at 'em and I think only one sack came out of it (well, in fairness, a game clinching INT did as well). For the most part, though, Rivers owned the Pack in the 4th quarter. No matter how you draw it up, that's not McCarthy conservatism.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I'm on board with '10 Rourke, fire Dom Capers!

While I certainly disagree with a lot of the scheme choices that are being made, I don't know if I would go so far as to advocate firing.

I think Wade raised a good point last night, though. He said that no defense can be considered clutch when, after having had a 21-point lead in the 4th quarter, it must rely upon a last-second interception to seal the game.

I get the conservative run out the clock plan but I don't think it meshes well with a defense that is prone to giving up big plays and quick scores. It doesn't do all that much good to run a couple minutes off the clock when the other team can go 60ish yards to the end zone in a few plays. They've given up quick scores late in games a few times now. If you want to play it safe and run out the clock on offense you have to make the other team burn up clock on their own drives. This defense can't do that very well. I say when you play a team with a good offense you keep the ball in Rodgers hands with the game on the line.

IMO MM has not been as conservative as he was in years past. He took a shot with the pass that was just alittle high to Jennings against the Chargers and has done it in other games this year. Some have worked and some haven't. In past years he would run all three downs and have to punt in 1 or 2 series. I'm glad to see him more agressive. I believe this is because he has more confidence in ARod and the reieivers now. Also, I think he realizes the talent with this team is on the offense now and it's more up to theim to win the game.

Look I do not mind a lot of runs late in the game. It is a good move to burn up the opposition's timeouts and to use up the clock. The point is it is a more conservative approach.
