Tagging Flynn= 14.5 million
Aaron Rodgers salary 2012= 8 million

The only way in hell they tag Flynn for a tag & trade is if Ted, Flynn, Aaron are physically sitting at a table at 1265 and make the guy running the team that's buying show up with cash cash and draft pick(s) in a suitcase prior to submitting it to the league. The compensatory pick is fine, and we burn no bridges by letting him walk as a grateful beneficiary of a class organization. Too many (bad) potential ramifications in trying to get cute with a tag & trade scenario. I keep trying to remind everyone, we are a simple folk come Wisconsin way, and this NY-style fancy-schmantzy-machination shit is for them, not us sodbustin' cow-farmer-types. 😳 😄

I had a hard time digesting the tag and trade theory as well. It seems many think it is the best way to handle the situation and improve the team. I know if i see Flynn being franchised, he is being traded and someone really wanted him.

Flynn has been impressive, but impressive enough to command a first round draft choice?

I would not franchise Matt Flynn, because I don't think teams are willing to give up a ton to get him.

I would let Flynn move on, and concentrate on getting Finley signed.

It would be the team he is traded to, who will then likely work out a long term contract. I understand it's unlikely Flynn will be tagged and traded by the Packers, but regardless, the Packers won't be paying him $14 million.

The Cleveland Browns are surely a top runner for Matt Flynn. Holmgren *supposedly* inquired about Flynn before this season. Maybe, just maybe Holmgren sees so much in Flynn that he jumps to a quick offer so he doesn't hit the FA market?

Could this be a possibility?

Getting a 2nd or even a 3rd would be better than getting a compensatory pick, and we would be able to make sure that Flynn doesn't end up where we don't want him. That's clearly better than getting a compensatory pick.

The only real downside to franchising Flynn is that it reduces the team's leverage in negotiating with Finley.

I don't think Finley has as much leverage as he thinks he has. All we have to do is play a highlights reel of his drops. As silly as it sounds, there's truth to that.

Finley - I want....

Ted - You're not a top 5 TE. (whips out the stat sheet)

Finley - D'oh!

There have been some good posts in here and I think this article by Brian Carriveau  sums it up pretty well (and falls much along the lines of what you all have been talking about.

What I really like about the article is he points out that it isn't necessarily a tag and trade, but more like a trade and tag. A team would agree to terms with the Packers first and THEN the tag would be placed. With that said, if a tag is placed on Flynn and not Finley, then maybe a deal has been worked out with Finley and a team (I am going with Washington or Cleveland) has offered something for Flynn.

Then we could all be happy and our greed will be met.
