Another guy who I really like the thought of as a big money FA OLB prospect, and also a DE who would have to convert is Cliff Avril. Looks like the Lions might not have the salary cap room to re-sign him, and he has ideal OLB size, at 6'3" 260 lbs. 11 1/2 sacks, something like 6 forced fumbles last year, two TDs, and he's only 25 years old.

Of course, I'm trying not to get my hopes up for big FAs, because that's not how Ted rolls, but it just sounds so tempting.

It's not so much that he takes a pass he just waits until everyone else is done competing for FAs and grabs up the leftovers if anyone good is left. I don't think he has any problem with signing a FA if he can get a good deal on him.

Although, at times, I kind of wish he would. Then the argument goes to, if they are available via Free Agency, chances are, there's a good reason for it.

Maybe now that the Packers are such a strong young team poised to make a long run with their franchise QB, there might be an FA or two who would take a fair offer from GB over a crazy money offer from, say, Washington. Dare to dream, I guess.

Expect the best, accept the worst.

Wishful thinking, I'd guess, but maybe Ted finally does splurge this year and overpay? I'd doubt it, but sign me up for going after Mario Williams. I'm still reminded of Reggie McKenzie's quote that he'd have been dancing in the streets of GB had Williams slipped to them... maybe Ted feels something similar.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that. Makes sense though. Williams is one of those rare elite big men that Thompson always talks about that "God only makes so many of."

Is it just me, or do the Packers have a lousy track record lately of converting DEs to OLBs? I wonder why they think they will do any better with Neal?

How do you mean DEs to OLBs? You mean 4-3 DEs to 3-4 OLBs?

It's a lot harder to do from a 4-3 DT to a 3-4 OLB, which is what they're doing in Neal's case.

He does occasionally do things that surprise us. 2008, our biggest weakness was D and that's why we had a Vikings, I mean losing record.

2009, he lands CM3 and Raji in the draft and the 3-4 works for 2 years and we're back in the hunt, with two trips to the Playoffs and a SB win.

2011, once again our problem is D. Our O falters one day and our D couldn't bail us out. So what will 🇹🇹 do? It's anyone's guess, but I'm guessing he goes either heavily after a pass rusher or he moves up in the draft to get one.

Given that our current team is good, players might be willing to take a little less to come in and compete for a ring. Just a thought.
