With free agency somewhat underway in that teams are free to contact players’ agents to discuss a deal, much of the talk in Green Bay has centered around wide receiver Greg Jennings.  Jennings is unquestionably the marquis name out of Green Bay that has very solid potential to be wearing a different uniform this [...]

I like this article.

I feel like Jones was the most pleasent surprise of the season, next to Hayward.

The Pack is/were in for a difficult choice here. You have two guys coming back from some pretty serious injuries, so you just don't know how they'll play right away. You'd like to have a veteran presence like Hawk in that case. If you want to play it safe, you let Jones go and retain Hawk.

If I were in charge, though, I'd say goodbye to Hawk. Not because he's a bad player by any means, but because he's an ok player. Allocate some of that money to Jones' new contract and you have a player who, at least, plays on the same level for less money.

Our best combo right now would be Jones and Bishop, with Smith and Lattimore backing them up and Hawk starting somewhere else.

Did GB make a qualifying offer on Jones before the FA period? If not I assume some of the 8 organizations who inquired are made up by his agent but there are a few who are interested. At least one of them is probably interested in giving Brad a starting job. I doubt GB will even if they release Hawk. Most likely Jones is gone to another team. That means they will have to keep Hawk out of concerns for the injured LBers coming back healthy. Unless they wish to allow the others to fill in for a few games/all season.

Honestly, I thought he improved his play, had his best year ever in GB, but we can do better. Way better. Brad Jones having his best year ever isn't saying all that much, because he never really did anything in his time here, save for STs. Take away his games against JAX and TEN, and he didn't amount to much at ILB. Did he do anything in the playoffs? Not really. Had some tackles chasing down Peterson, Gore and Kaepernick, after the damage had already been done... both playoff games, 0 TFL, 0 Sacks, 0 PDef, 0 FF, 0 FR.

We need an instinctive ILB with a nose for the football, and the ability to get there to stop it or force it out.

Hawk is a "run stuffing" LB in a passing league. (Who usually gets dragged backwards on the tackle.)

Jones may not be an all pro but he can turn and run with a TE. Can any other LB on our roster do that? Maybe Manning, we just don't know about him due to his illness last TC.

4 passes defended in 16 games, plus two playoff games. Again, Jax, Ten and 2 against Chi. Zero INTs on the season

I don't know steveishere, I was thinking he was a lot better too, but some of those games. Wow. We were exposed in the middle of our D. Both Jones and Hawk struggled most of the year in coverage, and neither did a thing in the playoffs.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/02/21/ranking-the-2013-free-agents-linebackers/

Summary: After some underwhelming play as a 3-4 outside linebacker, the Packers moved Jones to inside linebacker. Then Green Bay had injures at the position which allowed Jones to emerge as an every-down starter. He managed a positive run defense rating in nine of 11 regular season games. In coverage, he allowed a 68.4% Catch Rate, which was fifth best for middle/inside linebackers who were targeted at least 30 times. He might lack highlight plays, so fans might not be excited to have someone like Brad Jones on their team, but the fact that he can play both run and coverage well makes him a valuable option.

You can believe it or not but this is entirely more reliable to me than strictly looking at how many ints/pd he had.
